TPiR HD?

As I was watching Price today, I noticed something as one of the contestants was celebrating and I got a good look at the side of one of the cameras, and I noticed an "HD" logo on the side of it. Does this mean that Price will be making the upgrade soon, or is that just there as an option to those taping in 33?
Anyone in the know?

If anything, CBS is just future-proofing all of its studios. They would probably want HD cameras in the studio in the event that someone else wants to do an HD show in there. I doubt Price will ever go widescreen, let alone HD.

Um, if the show is still around in three years, they don't have much of a choice.

The only game shows that have confirmed plans to air in HD are Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!.  Price will undoubtedly make the move eventually but to my knowledge there's been no formal announcement.

(For what it's worth, I can't find Barker on any of the lists of "Best Looking/Worst Looking Stars in HD" on tvpredictions.com. ;-)

I thought the FCC rules mandated only a switch to digital, not necessarily HD.   Have I missed something along the way?

I don't know, but I have to think if terrestrial television signals are gonna die in 2009, and they have to provide a digital hi-def signal, there is little to no point to continuing to produce normal-res programming.

Frankly, this "doubt" smacks of more oh-noes-don't-change-anything-on-my-favorite-show.

No, you are correct.  Just because a broadcast doesn't mean it's an HD broadcast.  I read an article on this awhile ago and can't directly quote it right now.

Of the slew of digital channels available from my cable service, only a handfull are in HD.

Personally, I'd like to see it happen but it would only show just how old and banged up a lot of their props are.

HD would also show how old and banged up ol' Barker is. And I'm not sure I'd like to see that.

Heh, I was thinking more along the lines of how old and banged up the set is...but good point there.

I don't think it will necessarily reveal how bad things are. After all, many shows have made the switch to HD without massive changes. Granted, some of the props would need touchups, However, it's not like "Oh, no, HD is here, no more old people on TV!". TV gets better, the propmakers will get better, the makeup artists will get better.

They could also go to something like 720p, which is not the highest definition, but a definite upgrade.

Then again, this could be something that happens after Bob is gone.

I don't doubt it at all. It is going to happen. In several years they will not have a choice in the matter.

Thats the problem though isnt it in the US over the air network HD, old NTSC tv wont be able to manage ATSC thats in HD, least with digital cable or satellite theres the option of switching on the non high def version of the show if you got an older tv set.

I love HD, good thing the UK has it sorted and has over the air thats digital and will have seperate HD stations when the analogue band switches off.

HD still in the testing phases in the UK, cabled rolled it out and satellite is starting mid May, and BBC trailing tests over the air in London.

But for now im happy with HD promo videos of Zebra and other animals from Africa, and the odd classic music concert.

CBS airs all its HD content in 1080i I think, but 720p is in my oppinon a little nicer because of that little p aka progressive scanning.

Now if anything id rather see PiR shot in widescreen (which doesnt mean HD, but sadly most assocaite it with HD there) and have more lighting in the studio.

Just a side remark on the down-side of high-res images: I read a couple years ago that porn helped the VCR and cable TV catch on big, but that it wouldn't do the same for DVD's and HDTV, because those formats would reveal the imperfections of the models.

A bit of good news/bad news I learned about watching CBS and other networks in HD recently:  The good news is that CBS allows full end credit runs with their original show music and credit display with no promos or credit crunches...but for some reason, it's only on their sitcoms, not anything else like "Ghost Whisperer".

The bad news is there's a lot of digitized breakup and broken up audio during a hard rain or worse, at least around here, so I have to switch over to the same show in blotchy analog on my huge set in order to follow what's being said.

You recieving your CBS station from over the air?

If you have to switch to analogue its most likely its their digial UHF transmitter, which everyone knows isnt as powerful as VHF.
