Random MG Questions and J! Request
« on: April 13, 2006, 11:12:03 PM »
Hello there.

Recently, I've been thinking about a couple of Match Game '7x scenarios and I've been wondering if they have ever occured:

1. Has a contestant ever been buzzed for taking too long while answering anything on the show (front game, Audience Match, Super Match)?  I know on one occasion, a contestant kept taking a really long time while answering a question, but she finally came up with an answer (although rotten) just as the buzzer sounded.  If this did occur, what were some of the details about it (such as approx. date, what the question was, were the celebrities' answers shown)?

2. Specifically, what were the occasions where a question had to be thrown out?  I know about three incidents:
[*]Last week, when GSN aired the MG75 eps., Buck Owens was asking Gene if his answer was OK.  Stupidly, he held his card high in the air for everyone to see.
[*]On MG79, Gene accidentally filled in the ________ before the celebrities finished writing. (See video here)
[*]Can't remember when it was, but there was a question along the lines of "Dumb Dora was so dumb, she put ______ under the arms of her chair."  There was a celebrity in the 4th seat, and she asked Gene to clarify the question.  When he emphasized "under the arms of her chair," she immediately shouted, "Oh!  Deodorant!"  Whoops.
And the request; I was watching the Classic Jeopardy! clip posted on the Videos thread, and noted the theme to Jeopardy 1978.  As many of you mention, the theme is absolutely one of the greatest.  Many also mention how "Frisco Disco," the show's theme, was also a prize cue on Wheel during the 80s, sometimes getting a full run-through during extremely long prize rattles.  Would anybody be so kind and post either a sound or video clip of one of these "long" prize rattles with this particular theme.

Thanks in advance to those who answer these! :)

    Match Game '74:

"Dumb Dora is so dumb, she wore a ____ for the office pool." (Or something like that.)

Gary Burghoff: "Ah, no swimming allowed then?"

The question is tossed, and Gary removes his shirt as per a bet he made with another panelist that he would not screw up.

Robert Morse, who was on MG 74 was the only panelist to blow a question TWICE in one week.
One question was about a monkey going BLANK. The contestant couldn't think of an answer, and Robert tried to help by acting like a monkey. To make matters worse, the panelists said either going APE or going BANANAS, which should've matched, but didn't. They brought the contestant back anyway.
The second time, Robert showed his answer prematurely.
He never appeared on the show again after that week.

I think this was MG 75. In the Super Match, the head to head was TERRY _____. Gene even spells it, but despite that, both Gary Burghoff and the contestant insisted they thought he said PERRY ____. They gave him another question.

The so-called "lost" episodes of MG79 had one such instance.  It was the one and only CBS game between two new challengers because of a retired champion.  The circle player won the on-air coin toss and got the first question, but when Gene called for the contestant's answer on that question, he went to the triangle player out of habit!  The question had to be thrown out because of it, but Gene went through the stars' answers anyway.

    1. Has a contestant ever been buzzed for taking too long while answering anything on the show (front game, Audience Match, Super Match)?
Yes. It was during the main game, and Gene kept prodding and prodding for an answer, but apparently there's a rule that you 'only' get thirty seconds of thinking time for a question.

Regarding a retired champion, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but with a game that's admittedly not much of a game, I find it incredible that someone could win so often, and to such a degree that he or she would retire because of a winnings limit.

It took less time to reach the $25K limit when the Star Wheel was added to MG7x, could be done in as few as three games instead of five. That limit was never reached pre-Star Wheel, despite champions winning as many as 11 games.

The Star Wheel element never even occurred to me. Had I looked closer, I would have seen the date of 1979 as well. Oops. The fact that any person could win eleven games on a show such as Match Game is still surprising, since one doofus celebrity or a question you just don't get can harpoon your shot at the money.

I don't recall them even keeping a clock on this. The buzzer sounded when Ira Skutch and the S&P person sitting next to him agreed it was time to sound the buzzer.

I'm surprised at how long the contestants were given.  I remember one episode where Gene read the question twice, showed the contestant the card, and even sat down in front of her podium waiting for an answer.  Must have gone on for close to a minute.

Regarding "Frisco Disco", most of those complete run-throughs occured during the first season.  I have an episode from the second syndicated season where there was an edit part way through the third "verse", which took it back half way through the first "verse".  I guess any good music director doesn't want to run out of music part way through the prize descriptions!  :)

Maybe Ira waited for Gene to give him the "I'm dying out here" look. I dunno.
