Well, I should probably apologize for having a somewhat misleading title; it may have been exaggerating quite a bit. But, I still have a bad taste in my mouth after watching this.

It may work for Britain, but I'm damn sure a TPiR like that won't work here.

Depends on how seriously you take the show, I think.

Thing is, we know a lot of people who take it WAY too seriously.

Can I ask how this became the rallying cry of the "I'm too good for Golden-Road" crowd?  'Cause, ya know, some of us actually enjoy knowing useless crap like this.

I've have eps. of Crowthers and Bruce's PIR and I'd say it's a close third.  Sure the host has a shrill voice but you get over fast.  It reminds me a lot of Bruce's version.  Nice party atmosphere.  I wish they'd spent a little more money to get a new wheel made but what the hell.

As a side note, the early Bruce shows weren't that great either but look how much of a cult following it got.
There's a difference between those who merely enjoy knowing useless crap -- something I think most of us on this board have in common -- and those who believe that such useless crap is integral to their very existence and therefore should never be changed.  When you see too many of the latter, it's easy to make the mistake of lumping them in with the former.  Occasionally it bears repeating that most of us would not, say, throw the TV out the window at the slightest change in a product's price. :-)

What he said. If the shoe fits, wear it. If it doesn't, put it back on the shelf. Simple.

(That said, it's been my experience that the folks who get the most pissed-off when I say something like that seem to have awfully accurately-sized feet.)

Wow.  If Bob ever retires, I hope they find someone as personable and friendly seeming as Bruce.  Compairing Bruce to Joe is like Apples and organes.

I make no claims to not be completely geeky to the highest order. My enjoyment (extreme enjoyment in some cases) means that I recall information about those topics. My brain is wired as such that I remember large amounts of information on several topics.  But even I have limits.

I have no problem if someone wants to remember the premiere date of every single pricing game on the show. I take extreme offense at a clique of fans getting on their high horse and saying I'm less of a fan, or less worthy than them because I don't know when the price of the Hot Pockets changed.

They've clearly gone for the ironic angle for the show. Just listen to the voiceovers! I think the show's main problem is that it isn't silly enough.
That makes a lot of sense to me.  Y'all are, after all, the country that has (had?) a drag queen hosting your version of Match Game.  It's not my taste, but neither were people dressed as chickens to play Let's Make a Deal.

In answer to Clay's question, ... people seem to have a memory that what it actually gave away was pretty tatty and "novelty".

Thank you.  The post you were clarifying was so chock-full of bizarre misspellings that I never, ever would have realized "tat" was intentional.

By the way, what are Hot Pockets selling for these days?

Blankety Blank has an interesting history in this regard as well - it was certainly never a show people went on for the prizes, and it was certainly de rigeur for whoever was hosting at the time to comment on how cheap everything was for comic effect.

But then when Lily Savage's version transferred to ITV after a largely successful run on the BBC, they completely glamourised the set and the prizes turned (basically) actually quite good. Despite this, it was still being hosted by working class 40-year old Liverpudlian single mum Lily Savage and the celebs were lower down rung of celebrity, so it managed to feel more lowbrow even if the budget apparently went up a bit. The format wasn't really the joke anymore.

Paul O' Grady (the man behind Lily Savage) is currently pulling in huge amounts of viewers being curmudgeonly for his afternoon chat show, which now broadcasts immediately after DoND in the afternoons after ITV forgot to renew his contract despite being one of their biggest assets. So there we are.

Maybe just by being prepared for it now, I found Tuesday's episode (actually #3, since they showed two different ones on premiere day) of Joe's PIR to be markedly better.

Two questions:

1) Why would they have chosen two boring games (One Right Price and Swap) for the premiere? and

2) Given that you can't win eleventy billion dollars on Plinko, why exactly does the audience get so excited over it?

It's putting a smile on my face. Considering I was expecting to really dislike it, it's doing rather well for itself as far as I'm concerned.

I gather they record two shows at each recording session and use the same pricing games in each.

Yeah, this is kinda where I lie too...I feel less welcome over there, because I'm "uninformed".
And, if you disagree with them on something (like the Ten Chances idiot), well, you're damned there too.

Why don't you go over there and ask them?

2) Given that you can't win eleventy billion dollars on Plinko, why exactly does the audience get so excited over it?
That's a fine question. Once I got the meta-joke, I really liked the Oriental styling of the board's graphics. The ONLY thing is that risking a few hundred pounds to win a several-thousand pound prize isn't much of a risk at all. Which could be exactly what they're going for, for all I know. When the values were 250-1,000 pounds, there was the chance you were trying to double or triple up, and that was at least a tougher choice.

I'll give them credit for making Plinko interesting to watch again, though.

"Plinko!  The All-New Price is Right."  I quiver at the thought if GSN ever sees this version after Bob retires and CBS surrenders the rights to the format.
