With the way this countdown is going, it wouldn't suprise me for them to show the Dating Game.

I think DATING makes the cut, but with Lange at the helm (there's too many choice moments from that show for them to ignore that version--GSN may be strange, but not that strange).

And I predict the show they'll run will be either:

a)  Steve Martin
b)  Richard Dawson
c)  Andy Kaufman
d)  Bob Saget
e)  Paul Lynde or
f)   Michael Jackson

Meanwhile, let's remember--"Greatest" lists are by their very nature subjective and capricious.  This one is no exception--and for me any of these entries could be argued in favor of making the list save the GSN originals.

My only complaint is that I would've preferred more of a clipfest with commentary (even if it is imitating the backbone of VH1) than how they're handling it, especially since they're not going out of their way to get one-shot licenses, save "STYD."  But that's how they're going to handle it and we just have to deal with it for the next few weeks.

Please, offer the argument in favor of $1.98. I _really_ want to hear it.

Or, alternately, you could not watch, like I'm doing.

The best argument I could make is that it's part of Barris outrageousness at its near-pinnacle, only to be topped by "3AC."  I could state that the entire Barris portfolio of 1978-79 could be given as an example, but that "$1.98," as the new show in that equation, could be the symbol.  But I could also agree that it didn't really belong in the 50.

'3AC"'s claim to the 50, as I see it, is as the show that temporarily brought Barris down--although some stations were uncomfortable with "TDG" and "TNG," it was "3AC"'s crashing and burning that caused him to shut down completely in 1980--and even though he was back a year later with "Treasure Hunt," everything he did after that until he sold the company that got on the air was remakes of his most popular shows.  (Neither "$1 Million Talent Show" nor "Comedy Court" got beyond pilot.)  That one show could do what "3AC" did to him makes it notable, if admittedly not "Great."

But none of that gets past the very basic notion that it's not a game show.

If I'm doing a list of the 50 best fruits, I do not get to include a carrot, no matter how good a carrot it might be.

Weren't those two in the same episode, or am I mistaken?

Okay there's completely subjective and completely ridiculous.

OK, now it's just getting stupid.  #35, Sale of the Century, doesn't get a full episode (I was kinda hoping it would once Bill mentioned it), and yet Dog Eat Dog, at #34, gets the Greed treatment.

NOT WORTH IT ON THURSDAY

GSN tempted us by mentioning Sale of the Century with some pictures for #34

but it is Dog Eat Dog for #33

See, I like seeing the good in everything.
The good is, GSN lets me save my tapes until next week!

Isn't it funny (in a "you cannot be serious" way) that last night at 9, GSN aired "Dog Eat Dog" with "Greed" at 10 and tonight it's vice versa?  I was really hoping to see $ale again.

Well, back to Pat Kiernan...

Something tells me you may end up saving most of those tapes even longer.  Aside from $20,000 Pyramid and the blue set TTTT (which was teased in the promos), I think most of the rest will be the same recycled garbage from the current schedule.

Which pretty much answers the question about whether or not monkeys smoke crack.

Right, but there were more than a few half hour eps.  ISTR close to 30 during the first few runs.  In the case of Greed, there is exactly one half hour show.  Where do you propose to put it on a schedule?
I remember a few cases where they placed a half-hour Millionaire after a 90-minute Amazing Race, so there's one possibility.
Couldn't they fill an hour with 1/2 hour of the show (Greed) plus a half an hour of commercials (or haven't the GSN monkeys figured out how to do that yet?)
Well, the smart thing here (and remember I said smart) would have been to play the 1/2 hour Greed, and paired that with BTC (which, of course, they have).

Not necessarily.  A more thorough check of the promo shows that GONG, DATING and TJW are expected to be among the list, and the press release mentions that a Marshall HSq, a Thom McKee TTD and a classic NEWLYWED will be shown as well.  PASSWORD6x is also included in the promo (although the press release refers to P+ making the cut--they may include both or just include one).

So there just might be a few gems still on the horizon.  And if not, c'est la vie.
