I think the idea of advertisers going for the 18-35 year olds because they have the most spendable money (forgive me if that sounds confusing or wrong) is Bulls**t. With student loans, most young people in entry level jobs, and that demographic buying their first basic necessities, cash or the most gullible.

Basic necessities? Such as soap, shampoo, ketchup, toilet paper?
There's no established brand that I really buy of anything except deodorant--I use Old Spice exclusively. Otherwise, I buy whatever is on sale, or occasionly, if I see something advertised on TV, I will try it (moreso with food).
Meanwhile, my parents are set in what they buy...Era Detergent, Bounce fabric softener, etc., and they really don't seem to change from this.

Just to go back and deal with this...
It's not that 18-34s have more disposable money, it's that they are more likely to try different or new products. As Mark indicated, once you past that level, you're more likely to say "I buy Era because I've bought Era in the past, it works, and I see no reason to change." The older folks do have as much or more disposable income, but except for deciding between Fibercon and Metamucil, they're not listening to the siren songs.
Or as Lewis Black said, "You don't suddenly look at a Pepsi ad and think 'maybe I've been wrong all these years. There's another way I should be getting my sugar.'"
