I swear I had no idea that there was even such a thing as the Monty Hall Problem which was mentioned by Dwyer in his segue into the '76 episode.

[/quote]

Just got a chance to watch the recording. I realized the "grocery" deal was "The Monty Hall problem"

She was playing for a car  valued $5100 and change.  She had 5 products and had to pick the one valued 59c.  After she picks, Monty then eliminates 3 wrong choices, leaving two choices.   He offers her the chance to "call off the deal" basically "switch" first for furniture valued $1700.  He then offers her the furniture + 300. . 500. . .1000.

We all know her odds of winning are 4 times better by switching.  So by offering more than half the value of the car to switch was Monty basically indicating she had won the car

The thing about the Monty Hall Problem is that it really only works as an abstract exercise.  As Monty himself has said, once he's involved, his job is to confuse you.  Maybe he only plans to offer you a switch, or a large sum of money, if he knows you DON'T have the car.  Or maybe he plans to offer you those things only if you DO.

The only way the Monty Hall Problem works is if you know what the rules are from the beginning, and the rules don't change as a result of your actions.  Since Monty was always free to mix things up depending on what you did -- or what he thought you MIGHT do -- the one place the Monty Hall Problem really didn't matter was on Monty's show itself.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

If I remember the grocery deal, that was NOT the Monty Hall Problem. He didn't offer her a chance to switch to a different product, he offered her a chance to bail out entirely, which he almost always offers anyone in her postition. The theorum states if he exposed a bunch of the wrong groceries, doors, whatever, your odds are better if you switch to the one that isn't revealed. Monty never offered anyone this opportunity. That's why (or another reason why) Monty often says the theorum doesn't apply to him.

I realize it is not identical and I did use the word "bascially" a lot.  Yes there is no way he would ever offer a straight swtich in that situation.

But it is the same idea. The host manipulates revealing the choices or boxes to make it appear your odds are 50/50 when they are just as bad as ever.

Here he did not offer a switch, but he did offer $2700 to give up a 1 in 5 chance at a 5100 car.   Not an equal trade but getting awful close.   I was asking why would he offer such a sweetheart deal unless she had chosen the car.

Matt answered to play with her head and maybe think she had the car when she didn't.

Incidentally, special ads for the show are on the network, plugging Finale Week.

You know, in case anyone cared.

...with no clips from the top 6, by the way, only clips from what they've already shown.  Guess they expect to shock our pants off with Match Game and Family Feud.

Then we really need to stop calling it that.  It only encourages him.  Maybe "The Banker's Swap-Offer Dilemma"... ;)

6: Wheel of Fortune, which, surprisingly, gets skipped for...

5: Millionaire, specifically, the July 11, 2000 David Goodman episode.

And the first show to not get hosed tonight is...

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, #5.

Wheel of Fortune weighs in at #6 with a couple of stills.

Wheel having nothing but stills of a former era shocks the hell out of me. Almost a joke.

Millionaire is good, but not THAT good. IMO, other than saving ABC, it hasn't established itself to be a top 10 show. Top 20 maybe, top 25 yes.

Then again, wasn't Lingo like, 19 or something?

It's pretty much given from here on out.
The aired shows will be Family Feud and Match Game. Jeopardy will be #4 and Price is Right will be #2, and both will simply be mentioned.

It certainly has for me. (It's my #2 show, to be specific.)
