The final season abruptly began today that aired on weekdays less than two months  ago. I wonder if the  rights to the fifth year have lasped before the April Fools show could air.

And as I watched this episode, you can tell the budget was kinda low when you're getting people like Kennedy, Mama Harper, Duane "Dog" Chapman, Dr. Ruth and freakin' CARROT TOP in your panel of nine.

(and Martin Mull should never set foot in the center square again. ever.)

Did they at least air the end of the 2003 College Tournament before they made the switch?

  • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.

I don't think it was so much Vicki Lawrence, but it seemed like (and I haven't seen that week of eps. in about 2 or 3 years) they made sure they hid the fact that it was Vicki playing Mama...instead of just saying "Vicki Lawrence as Mama". Was she ever acknowledged as Vicki on that week of shows?

I thought Martin Mull was a pretty decent Center Square, certainly miles better than Whoopi.

I actually liked the rotating square concept from the year before, but I guess that got a little costly with some of the selections (Alec Baldwin, Ted Danson).

Wasn't that the week they were plugging "Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two Woman Show"?

Darn. The only episode I taped of that in first run was the final, and I didn't tape the open. I was hoping to get a copy with the open, but oh well.

And hey, I've got no reason to complain about the episodes airing now. Any show with Vicki Lawrence is OK in my book. :)

I'll have to agree on that, but that may just be because I don't think Whoopi is very funny in the first place...

I love Martin Mull (well, not in that way), but he seems a little droll for the center square. He's perfect in the lower-left, Weaver-Gobel slot.

And they did mention it was "Vicki Lawrence as Mama" in the opening. She was on her game that week, too.

Last year, I was talking with somebody who worked on the show and the subject of Martin came up. He agreed when I said that I thought Martin was funnier when he wasn't in the center square.

Strictly our opinion, of course.

Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS
