GSN Schedule Notes for early October

There was a lot of weirdness there--the clock was stopped at :17, then restarted shortly thereafter, but the word wasn't put back up until about :15, and Allen told the confused celeb that he has "13 seconds" left (as it continued to count). They then stopped the clock for about 5 seconds, presumably to make up for the confusion. Then the clock was frozen at :01, but the buzzer sounded anyway, and the contestant provided the password a split second later.

I say, to heck with the clock--the production staff wasn't paying attention, and messed up the players' mental game. No problem awarding that money, last show or not.

For collectors who want the date info, the GSN ABC Password aired October 23, 1973.

Maybe GSN will acquire and air the Valentine's Day '72 episode some time down the road.
I don't understand why they'd have this episode and not the other, or even the finale for that matter. But then again, they should have episode 3 of Blank Check too..

It'd be nice, but it's one of those many things that while I'd love for it to happen, just doesn't seem that likely

Maybe the others aren't in broadcastable quality at the moment (if you notice, the video on THIS episode isn't exactly the most superb ever, and there's been a few glitches)

One of those shows I've never seen, due to the various reasons out that, but that I'd certainly like to.

As for the return of the Game of the Week, at least GSN appears to be attempting to make amends with the classics fans.
I wonder if these rare series will only come from the G-T library....

I'm grateful if they bring something like this back, but I hope they'd showcase series from ALL their libraries.  If they don't want to spend money to license a whole season of a series, it shouldn't cost too much to just air one episode once in a while.  They did it for the top 50...

Hasn't it been mentioned that sometimes these shows are in private collections and maybe the networks don't have access to them?  For that matter, we don't know for sure that GSN DOESN'T have it.

If I'm not mistaken, the ABC Password that GSN aired came from a private collection.

Here's my question about these lost episodes: we know some of the TV museums have some of these things. Is there anything that stops the righsholders (say, Fremantle) from going to said museum and claiming the old tapes?

I'm sure they work with the rightsholders when the tapes and films and kinescopes are donated, and sometimes they even come from the rightsholders themselves.  As far as a later owner trying to be an "Indian giver" with them, the legal headaches and ugly PR that would come out of such a move would probably stop that idea in its tracks.  OTOH, if the rightsholder is doing some kind of special and wants a copy to use in the special, I'm sure said museums would cooperate.

Kevin may be interested in this, if no one else.  I picked up a DVD of an NBC "Shirley Temple Show" from 1961, which was done on color videotape and looked pretty good, from my vantage point.  It was an adaptation of "The Little Mermaid" with (and here comes the game show reference) Don "Anything You Can Do" Harron as the Prince.  It all depends on the rights holders as to what exists.  Shirley Temple apparently kept her videotapes.

I'd like to hear more about this 2/14/72 Password.  How do we know it exists?  Where was it sighted?  What shape did it appear to be in, kinescope or tape?

Apparently it and the Klugman/Somers episode are in similar condition.  I won't mention who (mainly because I don't know exactly who), but a lucky few of us has seen this episode (not me).

I don't think Chris is suggesting being an "Indian giver" so much as just getting a copy back from them if it had any airable value.

Meanwhile, I'd been looking for a thread in which to mention this, so here goes.  On the Mr. Peepers DVD collection available in stores, there's a credit on the back saying essentially that the episodes came from the UCLA Film and Television Archive.  I'm sure everybody jumped through all the right permission hoops to get a DVD release, but the simple fact that shows from the UCLA collection were used to make a home video release  opens up all sorts of lovely fantasies about what COULD come out of there!

I'm willing to be a little less circumspect.  I've seen a copy of it and it's not bad.  The copy I saw was of worse quality than what GSN aired last night, but I probably saw a third or fourth generation copy.  Chances are the "original" is significantly better.

It would be wonderful to imagine that GSN will do our detective work for us and unearth some more of these gems, but I'm afraid what happened last night will be the exception rather than the rule.  It sounds like the next few weeks of "special" shows are just going to be more episodes of things that they've aired before, just not often.  Now if you've not seen them, you're obviously going to be in for a treat.  But for those of us who've been watching the station for classic stuff ever since they first went on the air, they won't be nearly the treat that this Password episode was.

Now that would be entirely possible and likely and I think I've even heard of this happening, not just the Mr. Peepers example you listed but a few others. (Some of the 1950s live dramas, for instance.) That may even be covered in the agreement that donates the materials in the first place.
