Many of you are familiar with the tribute site for Musicradio 77 WABC in New York, but this week they have an 1972 aircheck of Jim Perry.

That's sweet.  He was pretty good behind the cart machines.

Must send my kudos to Mr. Sniffen.

Strange to hear Jim Perry as a DJ.......I almost expected to hear him suddenly say "Let's open up the board and get TO THE CARDS..."

I almost wish that they actually hadn't cut out the songs.  Certainly better than some of the dreck on today's radio.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm a little surprised to hear that 1972 Jim Perry sounded just like 1982 Jim Perry.  Take Dick Clark from any two adjacent decades and there seems to be a vocal difference.

/Parents raised me on Oldies.  Can't complain too much.
This signature is currently under construction.

Agreed.  Entertaining indeed-if only to hear Robert John sing something other than "Sad Eyes"!  I suppose we could inquire with the webmaster about the unscoped aircheck.

Did anyone else notice that the first time check Jim gave was "3 am on a Sunday morning"?  Did he ever 'graduate' from the overnight shift??

Speaking of Game Show people in their radio years, another radio aircheck site (www.reelradio.com) recently added a KODJ/LA aircheck of Rich "A NEW KAAAA!!!" Fields.

His announcing style had fit the late KODJ a helluva lot better than it does on TPIR today, FWIW.

And unless I missed it already, I hope that Mark Simone could snag Mr. Perry for an interview on the Saturday Night Oldies Show (www.wabcradio.com -- 6-10p ET) sometime in the near future...It would be great to 'hear' him out of retirement again -- even if only for 20 minutes!

Really? I thought Dick Clark sounded the same (like 1976 and 1986, for example)...

What's neat to me is listening to the old AT40 countdowns on XM....Definitely a vocal difference between Casey plugging the show on XM and then listening to the ACTUAL show...

Yeah, I got a kick out of that. The text above the audio link says, "You may not remember Jim Perry as a DJ at WABC." Well, DUH! I really like Jim's style here, though. I don't know why, but I'm kind of surprised by how good he is; he really sounds like he's having the time of his life in the studio. FWIW, I also got a kick out of Jim talking to the stinger ("Tell us who I am..." "JIM PERRY!")

To my knowledge, he did not.  But WABC was so stacked with legendary air personalities at the time that the chances to graduate from an overnight shift were few and far-between.

Why just limit it to CS?

Interesting stuff, Brian.  I'd never heard Jim doing anything other than games, so it's interesting to hear him in another vein.

How much do we really know about Jim Perry's pre-game show existence? Not much besides his WABC stint.
