Watch for a huge 50th year celebration prime-time special commemmorating Bob's amazing achievements
Involving a show in as much litigation as Barker has is ... amazing!

to be taped within the next month at a location away from CBS 33.
We can rule out the Burbank Hilton right off the bat.

Final show is June 7, 2007.  Confirmed via CNN Headline News and CBS radio.

EDIT:  Most likely tapedate.  Airdate then a few days later.

A Thursday not long after May sweeps... could be a primetime airdate.

One of the AP stories I saw does make reference to some kind of prime time special at some point.

Yes, but I don't think the prime-time special will be the final Barker ep.  I'd expect the finale will air Friday, June 15, 2007 (or possibly a week later) at its regularly scheduled time.

While a few of us have had our problems with Barker's hosting of Price during the last handful of years, I can't help but feel, based on the recent trends in game shows, that the show may get much worse without Bob than with him.

Yeah, I've also gotten rather jaded regarding the current direction of the genre.  In fact, if things continue as they are, once Jeopardy! (and, depending on how it goes, Wheel) is cancelled I just might bail on game shows entirely - especially if Joker and Combination Lock disappoint.

Sadly, I entirely agree.

I just hope to heck it is not a cruel joke like from April Fool's Day. [/quote]
This is news that's coming from the Associated Press, one of the most credible news sources in the country. I doubt this is a "cruel joke".

Hell, you got it straight from a Fremantle employee and a highly trustworthy one at that. Why do you need confirmation from a wire service?

Wow, coming home to this news. I knew it had to happen someday, but I'm still very sad to see him retire.

Thanks for all you've done, Bob. I wish you all the best.

FWIW, They just read the story on Bob's retirement during the National Fox Radio News report @ 5:00PM ET.

Scared me for a second there, the way the story started (with the opening theme and opening sentence) I thought they were gonna say that he died.

There was no mention on a replacement and/or if the show will continue.

I was fortunate enough to see him twice (once with my wife).   Now that the cat's out of the bag, it will be interesting to see how early you'll have to line up on Fairfax to see the show now.  (My bet is by next May, you'll see 50-75 happy campers lining up outside CBS TV City by *9PM* the night before taping).

He was THAT broken up about finishing behind Cullen in the poll?

That qualifies for the LINE OF THE DAY! if not the Month.

Over the past year or so, I've seen them start lining up at 10 pm on Sunday night.

Afterthought: Barker's retirement could result in the promotion of Roger Dobkowitz to executive producer. There is no one more deserving. Roger is one of the last few people who "gets it" when it comes to doing game shows, and a terrific guy as well.

Price appeared to be the last show that still had some old-school game show elements, and still hadn't moved into the 1990s (not a typo). And that alone gave the show its charm. There's still some good stuff on

I'm honestly wondering what Fremantle might do to this show. Not to sound fanb0ish, but this makes me kinda glad there's some other games on the horizon, not that Price is gonna go anywhere anytime soon, but I'm just hoping they don't have any "Extreme Price is Right" plans going on.

You mean what am I doing there that early?

O, ye whose hind quarters have never graced the corner of Beverly and Fairfax ...

there is a Wells Fargo ATM across Fairfax, facing the audience entrance where they line up.

I shudder at the thought of Wyleen May replacing Barker and Vinnedge. Remember One Hundred Percent? That Wyleen May.

Well, yeah, and I've been at Hollywood & Vine at midnight, so yer right, no position to talk. :)

Seriously, while I realize that preaching doom and gloom is all the rage now, is it at least a little possible that the Fremantle folks have heard the phrase "don't shiat where you eat?" Maybe they'll give it a chance under a new regime before futzing with it?

Yeah, the story just hit Yahoo, too.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061031/ap_en_..._barker_retires

Man, and you thought lines were long at Studio 33 already...
I have no words to really describe it. As many have already said, we knew this day would come eventually. The impact of it, however, was bound to be huge nonetheless.

But just think...in a matter of months, somebody in the numerous, repetitive "Who Will Replace Barker?" threads will have made a correct speculation. I shudder to think who that may be...

Fun Fact To Make You Feel Old: Syndicated Jeopeardy has allowed champs to play until they lose longer than they've retired them after five days.
