I think on "Match Game, Behind The Blank", it was said that the show was on the verge of cancellation around 1964-65 but that they had a few weeks to go, so it was decided to jazz up the questions some to make it more "fun". The ratings then picked up and the show was saved from cancellation.

What they did was things like "John and Mary went to ____." There may've been some giggling, but the answers would still be things like "the movies" or "dinner." At least there was something a little more for Rayburn to react to, but they were still on the other side of the racy line, where they stayed until the 1973 version.
