Game Show Panel at 2007 NATPE
« on: January 03, 2007, 10:30:42 PM »
I don't have a real reason or need to go, but NATPE sent me an email about a game show panel discussion they will be having.  Here's the email I got.

Quote
Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Think Tank: How We Got Here: The Game Show from I've Got a Secret to Deal or No Deal. From Match Game to Jeopardy!…from Pyramid to Millionaire, game shows have entertained us, inspired us, made us laugh, and even made us cry. They have permeated our lives in so many ways and have helped define “American Culture” for over seven decades. In How We Got Here: The Game Show from I've Got a Secret to Deal or No Deal, we deconstruct the evolution of the TV game show, from its creation, through the scandals of the 1950s... through its ’60s-era revival... to its golden age in the ’70s... and finally, to its twenty-first century incarnation.

On the panel will be Bob Boden, Michael Davies, Merv Griffin, Scott St. John, and Bob Stewart.  Also, according to recent reports from TVWeek, things are looking up for "Deal or No Deal", "Connections" or "Catch Phrase", and "Temptation".  Things are looking grim for "The Joker's Wild" and "Combination Lock", but who knows, early reports could be wrong.  BCI will also be announcing new game show DVDs from a five-year deal they have with Fremantle on January 16th.  We should be hearing about the new game shows, if there will be any, around this time.  NATPE is being held from the 14th through the 16th.

A tiny bit off topic, but the TCAs are on January 12th, and we'll hear GSN's announcements then as well as other cable companies.

Damn...Joker was the one I was looking forward to the most. If it doesn't work out, here's hoping for 2008 then...

Man, if you want five people on your panel to represent seventy years of game shows, they're probably the five people to have!
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

It's very expensive, and unless I'm mistaken, not open to the public. Dunno what press credentials are accepted, like having a website...

If you can get in, by all means, go. I went to NATPE in 2000 and it was , by far, the holy grail of television. Seeing big production companies pony up millions of dollars to dazzle stations into buying their product....they spare no expense to give guests plenty of celebrity experiences and tchochkies to leave with.... I ended up eating a meal personally prepped by Emeril Legasse, had one on one time with Deborah Norville, Martha Stewart, and the cast of King of Queens....took a photo with Verne Troyer, and walked into a bathroom with 'the Hoff'....

but the best, by far, was seeing Pat O Brien. He's a great guy, you know.

Matt hit the nail on the head.  I don't have that much money to throw around for that.  I'd love to go, but I'd like to pay bills.  Eventually, I'd love to, I'd rather pay my heating bill and pay for books ($600 is way too much) than fly across the country to NATPE.  They are advertising a cheap price to me in the email they sent me (after I asked them how cheap they can go) for $2750.  ESPN doesn't pay me that much.  I could go without food or light, but I'm good.
