My take on Dawson in the late 70's and beyond, once Feud was clicking with America, was that he wanted to do his show like "You Bet Your Life" -- monologues and contestant interaction took priority over gameplay (On Match Game, he loved to do Groucho-esque quips early on before he soured on the set).  Yet, heaven forbid if Gene Rayburn ever went off on a tangent at the start of the show, there were many times when Richard Dawson would be the first to chime in to say something like "let's meet the contestants".

However by that time, shows were becoming more rapid-fire Q & A-type shows, thus slower-paced and panel shows were becoming passe, yet Dawson didn't want to be sped-up.  He definitely did not like the idea of game wins increasing from 200 to 300 points.

Mind if I ask what Fates said about John in his book?

Not a lot from what I remember. I just got the impression that Daly and Fates did not have much of a relationship outside from the show and Daly liked WML's set format every week with minimal surprises.

Supposedly (from Fates' book), when Fates tried to propose some format tweaks, Daly said, "You save that showbiz crap for 'I've Got a Secret.'"

Gil wanted to do live demonstrations of contestants' occupations, for example, milking a cow. Daly wanted none of it. That all changed in the syndicated version with Daly gone.

Frank Wayne missed the Emmy deadline[/quote]
I'm not sure if I am familiar with that story--could you elaborate a bit?

Chris can elaborate if he feels it's warranted, but I think the nutshell is that Frank Wayne missed the deadline to submit an episode of Price for Emmy consideration in that year, and therefore it wasn't eligibile, and therefore Barker's head asploded.

I'd side with Daly on that one.

More specifically, it gypped Barker out of the "Best Emcee" Emmy.
