DEAL OR NO DEAL Canada

My son and I were able to take in the fourth taping of the five show special series that Global TV is taping of DEAL OR NO DEAL for Canada, and I can say that we weren't disappointed at all!

The set is generally the same size of the US set, same general layout. The differences are that our stage was an actual "maple leaf" shape, there are more on-set lights than the US version by way of the (tube lighting) like you see in the background of "1 vs 100", and that the backdrop for the models was more rectangular with the Toronto backdrop and CN Tower.

Howie was really funny off-camera during the Q&A and very polite to us when we got to meet him after the show. My son brought along our DOND Card Game case, so Howie got out his Sharpie and signed it for him! Great keepsake to have for his first ever game show!

The taping was quite long (at least 3 hours) but the game that we got to see was well worth it. The contestant (Jenny Monaco from Montreal, QC) was getting standing ovations after almost every case that she was picking after Round 2. I hope it translates on screen, because the whole audience was on pins and needles as the game progressed, and after the model revealed the case, the crowd ERUPTED! They are going to have to seriously edit DOWN that show.. ;)

Overall a great experience, and hopefully they will bring the show back for a few more episodes. Howie even mentioned during the break that he hopes DONDC gets picked up and he gets asked to come home more often!

Now, this makes me wonder...since they already have the host, did they import a few of the American producers as well, or are they just watching the NBC version that closely, and want to use as many of the US effects, so that Howie can be familiar with everything?

They brought up the same director (R. Brian DiPirro), and I believe that Scott St. John was in attendence in the production booth as well to help with the bank offers.  I know the Banker was Canadian (we got to see him a few times heading up to the booth).

Maybe by 2010, the tapings will get down to a reasonable amount of time, like 90 minutes.

If you can divulge such info, were the case amounts the same as our version or was the top prize $250 and a gift certificate to Zellers?

Only difference was that instead of $ 1 and $ 5, they turned into LOONIE and TWOONIE.

MrGameShow - congrats on getting into the taping, I'm quite jealous!  After spending six hours on a train ride back from Montreal to Toronto (on a game show mission, natch) I ran the three blocks from the train station to the studio in hopes of getting rush tickets (as I didn't beat the draw for tickets), with no luck! I went and saw "The Hour" with George Strombonopolous instead...

In any case, it's nice to have our own version!

Ryan :)

(who had tickets to see DoND Quebec - "Le Banquier" - but had the date switched on him ...)

Not quite right. The $1 is the Loonie, and there is a Toonie, but the $5 is still on the board. What got turned into the Toonie was the $400,000.

At least, that's how it's been in the first two aired shows.

And THAT, folks, is a sad commentary on the state of exchange rates between Canada and the US. :)

Yeah, but it's tax free, so we get to take all the cash home, instead of a tiny portion. :)

And the exchange rate is way better now. *neener neener*

Yep; when doing an X-E conversion the other day I saw that a million CDN $ is about 846,000 US $.  America Jr. is finally catching up to his big brother. :)

Actually a Millions CDN$ was worth just over 900,000 U.S$ a little over 6 months ago, but it has fallen back to the 85 cent level in recent months.

That, um, was kinda the point of my joke. You see, usually the joke works the other way around, but this time the American money is larger and the Canadian one is.....oh, screw it.

And that period in the 70s when the C$ was worth more than the US$ is chopped liver:;)

/Why do I feel compelled to say that Canada is "more than America, it's America Plus!"
//Complete with a huge plus sign
