According to this website Dick Van Dyke auditioned to be the emcee of the original "Price is Right."  It says the audition was in 1958, but I assume this is an error, there is also a photo of him standing next to what appears to be the logo.  It can be seen toward the middle of this page.

You learn something new every day. At one point Dick Van Dyke was under contract to CBS along with Johnny Carson and Orson Bean, so it's surprising to see him audition for TPIR. Just yesterday I learned that Jack Barry and Dan Enright did a pilot of Twenty One for CBS. Just when you think you know all there is to know ...

Tis true. On some interview I saw years ago, Dick spoke about the prospects of hosting Price. He didn't echo the usual actor's sentiments about such a job being beneath him. Instead, he was more concerned with his ability to handle it and his uncertainty about how well it fit into his overall career plans.

While the story is definitely true (thanks, Randy!), didn't the picture of Van Dyke show up on a PBS special a while back, and didn't we decide at the time that the picture was fake?  The photo on the site appears to be a frame grab from a video, quite possibly that same PBS program.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

That shows how levelheaded Dick was (and is)..The thing is, he was known more in the late 50's as a Emcee/Game Show panelist than an actor..

Good thing this reran last weekend on the local PBS affiliate...  It was from the game shows episode of the Pioneers of Television series from 3 years ago.

Was that face type on the signage ever used on TPiR?  Since quite a few images and items were fabricated for that series (WoF wheel with $157), it could be a PhotoShop job...

It looks like Arial (the bastard stepchild of Helvetica), which didn't exist in 1957. Looking at it again, that sign looks way too crisp to be from the 1950s.

The same photo appears in Steve Ryan/Fred Wostbrock's Ultimate TV Game Show Book, showing the logo from VanDyke's "Laugh Line" show, which make me agree with you, Matt!
