Either Jeopardy! is a mob front, or a tax haven for King World.
It kinda takes a bit of the excitement out of the two-day final when you realize that there is almost zero chance that the winner is actually going to surpass the grand prize--from what I recall, it happened quite a few times back when it was $25,000 for the "age" tournaments.

Now, I come at this from the other side. For one, I don't know---I like to see a grand prize be just that: a grand prize. "You have won our $25,000 Teen Tournament, and you'll be taking home $28,601." Sheesh, why not just play two regular games?
Also, I'm willing to bet that the show is making more than three times as much money now as it was two decades ago (especially since we're not accounting for inflation here). The regular games are now worth twice as much, the Teen Tournament worth three times as much, and the ToC worth two and a half times. I utterly fail to see any problem with that. Am I completely out of my wits?
