I've heard horror stories of a pilot for Match Game with former Dallas dish Charlene Tilton as emcee, which was taped during the mid-1990s that made the Michael Burger version seem like Masterpiece Theatre in comparison. Can anyone tell us more about this?

Here's what I recall, based on a pic and eyewitness descriptions:

- A set that looked more liked Just Men (each celeb had a small individual desk)
- The contestants revealed their answers in the maingame AFTER the celebs
- During the Super Match, the positions of the Audience Match and Head-to-Head Match were reversed

...'nuff said!

Add to all that the fact that Charlene's performance as host made Patrick Wayne look like Emmy material.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

By \"Emmy material\", I hope you mean that they were going to melt down Patrick Wayne and stamp him into a statuette.

First they'd give him the award, then turn him into one. Charlene was truly awful as a host, and according to accounts only hired because she knew a bigwig at the production company.

Why do I have the uncomfortable feeling that \"knew\" was a euphemism?

At least it was a rhyming euphemism.

(Just going for the joke, not lending any credence to the speculation)

You mean they didn't hire her for her \"bazooms\"?  :-)
