I always wondered if anybody has tried "What is" in a non-English language to fit the convention of the language, like "Qué es Madrid?"
KenJen, 3rd post in this thread.  Has anybody else tried it?  As far as I know, no.

Sadly, at the beginning of the original run, you had to get two things right: the kernel of relevant information, and the phrasing. "What is California?" wouldn't get you called wrong, but you wouldn't be awarded the money until you produced a proper question.
This is reflected in the first edition of the home game.  (I don't know about other MB editions because this is the only one I have.)  Some of those questions are phrased very oddly, too.

Fortunately, I am a kind MC and don't make players match the phrasing of the book.

I believe this even goes back to the Fleming version.

Gene Shalit once (successfully) answered a Daily Double pertaining to NBC's logo as such:

"Has anyone around here seen the very famous NBC peacock?"

First season, I want to say Liz Cachese: Was ist Achtung?

I always held out hope that Dana Carvey would be on CelebJ and that he'd have the opportunity to respond, "Could it be ... SATAN?"
