Stumbled upon this one today.

Seems like this is specifically regarding those call-in-and-lose shows, meaning this at least seems to have the potential to reach over here to the States, with particular respect to GSN.

I've seen complaints regarding Playmania on another board (no, not 'over there'), but I don't know if the calls for a government investigation are true or not (most likely BS)

I'm thinking it's sour grapes.

Since Playmania shows on its programs that you can enter for free plus full rules at the site, I think it absolves itself from any major problems.

Yeah, except they show it in about the smallest font they think they can get away with, and mention it as little as possible.

And it appears that part of the allegations revolve around misrepresenting the chances of winning through stuff like how forthcoming they are about the on-screen call queue, and while I can't prove it, of course, the feeling is very much that GSN hacks that too.

So I don't think they're as "absolved" as you do.

But I would think that's incredibly hard to prove, since there are no actual percentages/odds tossed around.  People can say "I think they're doing X, Y, and Z" until they're blue in the face, but unless they have something tangible to reference, there's no wrongdoing.  The only feasible complaint I could see being lodged is GSN favors one entry method over another, but that requires a sampling of entrants which, as far as I know, hasn't been published.

GSN is doing what they have to do to avoid problems.  They may not exactly go the extra mile, but they do enough to get by.

I don't think it would be hard to prove at all. Make 'em keep records. Or, here's a novel idea, how about some kind of C&P figure on-site?

Yeah, part of the article referenced how a show might have picked from a pool of callers already, but waited around while people still called in, dropping the 35 pence per dial. Same thing Playmania does. Well, sort of. I can't out-and-out prove that they have somebody ready to go while they're still taking entries, but from a production standpoint it makes sense. Get somebody from the large pool that texted before the game was really on the screen and just wait around, so you don't have to vamp while the caller's screened. All that "hey guys, the player's lounge is empty! Get involved, text 'play' to 77..." stuff? Pfft. It's beyond reasonable, in my opinion, to suggest all the text-and-loses are dishonest to some degree.

The girl in the picture (despite the caption) does not look like a contestant, but rather the host (and a fine one at that).

And if she's singing in that picture, I'd like to make her sing 5 octaves higher!  :-)
