Guys and gals, do you think there will ever be another SAG and/or AFTRA strike in this day and age of the internet, IPODS and DVDs?.

Obviously the 1980 actor's strike didn't affect game show production, as P+, MG and the Vegas version of HSq (among others) continued taping.  But why were game shows exempt from the strike?

I seem to recall, back in the Usenet days, that AFTRA came close to striking, and that would have shut down production on Bergeron's Squares, so I'm guessing it could be a SAG/AFTRA distinction. Randy or someone else with more showbiz knowledge than myself can probably explain better than myself.

Total guess: Game shows use freelance writers, so a union didn't affect them.

I think it may not so much be freelance as a matter of titles. See "Production Assistant" Dick DeBartolo on Match Game, or the "Producers" who sued the producers of America's Next Top Model, for example.

Ok...since I can't recall all of the game shows in '80, could there have been a possibility that if the right group would have been on strike, that all celebrity-based (aka MG, HS) game shows would have been..well...SOL?

IIRC, in this very forum, wasn't there a discussion that Goodson hired DeBartolo as a "Production Assistant" for "old" MG because he was too young for his writer's card?  If that was the case, he (Goodson) probably just kept the title across to the "new" MG.

Wikipedia says September 18, 1985.  Interesting fact...something I didn't know.

Me neither. I could have _sworn_ it happened during a writer's strike. Well, mea culpa.

Goodson used all non-union writers, who were given alternate titles such as "Editorial Staff". Frank Wayne had a WGA card but I don't know how this comported with his creating stunts for BTC.

All I remember about the strike is that Bobby Sherman said we (the company) could continue to book celebs on our shows due to some exemption. I don't know if Bobby knew the particulars of the exemption.

Since Fox was scared that the affiliates would have less patience for the network's growing pains than the network itself would (especially when there were still a lot of movie packages in syndication for filling those prime time hours and fewer regional cable sports networks to take away sports events), Fox relented and instead put in "America's Most Wanted" (which had been airing on the owned stations) and a show called "The Investigators," from the "Current Affair" production team (there was no such thing as Fox News back then).[/quote]

Is "The Investigators" the same show as (or related to) "The Reporters," a tabloid cousin of "60 Minutes" that was definitely airing on Fox Saturday nights in 1989/1990 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094536/)?  Steve Dunleavy, Jim Paymer and a few other no-name reporters from Fox local stations hosted/reported their own pieces (complete with "A Current Affair"-style re-enactments and salacious subject matters) in front of a black background with an old manual typewriter by the reporter's side.  What I remember most about this show was that the aforementioned typewriter (extreme close-ups of it) was used for the opening credits, commercial bumpers and closing credits.  Edd Kalehoff composed the score for this show and somehow managed to incorporate the sound effects of the typewriter into the theme song.  I would actually love it if someone could point me to Kalehoff himself so I could ask him personally for an audio copy of this theme song.  I've given-up on ever seeing/hearing an actual episode of "The Reporters" again, but would love to be proven wrong!

And yeah, I meant "The Reporters."  It has been almost 20 years.  :)
