So in order to play it "right," I have to do things like "If you don't give me $550 and Park Place, I'm going to give you a big wet kiss on the mouth"?
Not at all. To play it right, you can play by the rules in the box, which few people do. (For instance, if someone doesn't want or can't buy a property, it *has* to be auctioned.)

If you want to have fun, which is the point of games, you want to either 1) play by the rules—with a good game, should generally induce fun, or 2) amend the rules with rules that induce fun. Also, the sexual favors should be used not as threats. That's not fun at all.

I'm not telling anyone *how to play* Monopoly. I'm merely saying that in my experience playing Monopoly (through college, mind you) has been enhanced and has always resulted in all participating parties enjoying themselves. That is all.

Alas and alack, there are no hotels to be found because all twelve of them were on the board. She's looking for extra tokens and stuff, and when I said "hey, you're not allowed to build if the domicile you want isn't available, you can't do it" they all looked at me as if I had just sprouted horns.

I did an article about Monopoly house rules, and this one always shocks me. Frankly, the auction should only really come up one or two times when the player in control doesn't have enough cash on hand to buy. It's like Feud. You don't pass.

But that's part of the strategy; if I don't want a property for any reason- if I think it's a crappy investment, let someone else take it on, possibly paying more than face value in the process.

Honestly, I play to build up the light blues and magentas- I think the dark blues and greens are white elephants.

My new best friend. :-)

I absolutely suck at Monopoly as far as strategy is concerned, and always trade at the most inopportune times. I did a little Googling last nite for Monopoly strategies. A few people suggested going for the red and brown properties. I think at least one said Park Place and Boardwalk are overrated.

A few others also said buy on every roll, and not be so focused on building the Monopoly off the bat. I learned something. :-)

Yeah, but unless the bids get truly stupid (and if they do, those are people I don't want to be playing games with anyhow, 'cuz they're idiots), you should almost always be able to get your value back from a property in some manner or another.

(This is the problem: Monopoly isn't interesting if everyone at the table is playing optimally. It's only when you have suboptimal players in the game where interesting things happen. And a suboptimal player a) isn't fun to beat, and b) is only going to introduce more randomness into an already-too-random game.)

Apparently not, if you're still interested in playing Monopoly. ;)

Okay, I keep seeing people mentioning "the browns." These are the color groups as I know them, in order going around the board, from Go:

Purple
Light Blue
Magenta
Orange
Red
Yellow
Green
Dark Blue

WTH is "brown?" Did they change something and nobody notified this office? :)

The lowly pair has been colored brown in recent editions, but some editions still have them as purple.

They've been colored brown in recent additions in the US to match international editions, most notably the UK edition where the cheapies are brown.  I believe the Here and Now: World Edition instituted the brown referendum.

All this Monopoly talk is good stuff. The oranges are the best investment. I think I remember reading that New York Ave is the most landed-on non-railroad property on the board. Another strategy is that your best investment is to build up to your third house on each property (the point of best ROI), then only buy house #4 and hotel when you can absolutely afford it. Next best Monopoly to own is the railroads, especially when there are a lot of players. All of you probably know this already but maybe not.

I was looking on my bookshelves in vain last night for my copy of a book I think is called THE MONOPOLY COMPANION, that went over strategy rules and other histories of the game in detail. Amazon has it for about $8 new, $1 used. I read it at least a dozen times when I first got it. Lots of statistics. A great buy if you enjoy playing the game and haven't read it before.

New Monopoly game for the iPad is fantastic. A bit too heavy on the animation but a great game, very solid for the $5 or $10. A good level of customizable house rules are present. The medium-level AI player wants to trade constantly, and offers terrible trade deals, unless the AI is in dire straits...that's about the only gameplay downfall. The iPad version shows Mediterranean and Baltic as browns. I don't know about the iPhone version, but I imagine it doesn't scale as nicely as it does on the iPad.

Not even that.  The Chance on that side of the board is three spaces in front of the Community Chest between the greens.

/probably played 40 games of Monopoly one summer
//saw a hotel on a green ONCE
///somehow won that game with the greens

This isn't related to game show games.  Target has Monopoly Revolutions on clearance, for $14.50 at three different stores in this area.  The down side is that every copy of the game I saw, six combined at the three stores, were torn or had damaged boxes in some capacity.
