How many episodes of "The Who, What or Where Game" exist?
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:35:20 PM »
I know of one on the tape-trading circuit, which features a 5-time champion.

But are there any others on the circuit, in the MTR, etc.?

UCLA has nine episodes from 1971 and 1973. None of these are available for viewing.

The one on the circuit you mentioned appears to be the only one, and I do not know the contents of MTR well-enough to answer for that part.

I've visited both MTRs enough to know that there aren't any more of the WWW game there either.  Sadly, this seems to be another of those all-too-common examples of a show that's gone except for a small representative sample.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

It is sad that NBC erased the Who,What or Where Game like they did many other pre-1978 game shows. If only someone could have taken the episodes home like Art James or Ron Greenburg. Then we could see all the episodes on GSN nowadays.

I did not get to see this show until Fall 1972 when WILX-TV Channel 10 Lansing,MI  went off the shared-time deal with WMSB-TV, MSU's PBS station marking the return of WKAR-TV on Channel 23 and making WILX-TV solo on 10 ,with 10 now carrying all the NBC shows, including W3.

Hi there to all,
Unfortunately theres only one copy of the 3w's available. In those days I think they erased 'em before we left the studio. Can you imagine, 4 1/2 half years of shows. So be it.

Ron, I don't speak for the forum, but it's an honor to have you here. As an aspiring producer, I too, look forward to your stories.

That's assuming GSN had any interest at all.  Considering the programming they air currently, I don't think it would fit in.
Oh yes...nice to have you here, Ron.

I trust the news is just as grim for "The Big Showdown" - one of my 70's favorites.

Welcome, Mr. Greenberg.

Thanks to others on this board, I've had the pleasure of seeing the 3 W's, Big Showdown, and The Challengers.  All three are good games, and it's a shame the first two on the list only exist in very small numbers now.

While the likelihood would probably be small, it could be possible that at least some of the episodes may have been preserved - episodes of the CBS version of The Jokers Wild were found a few years ago in at a station's storage area, and episodes of The Hollywood Squares - also thought gone - were found mislabeled while searching for the show Dark Shadows. That said, the odds would be slim.

As for The Challengers, I'd love to see it again, however, it's one of those shows that just doesn't lend itself to reruns, and game shows just don't seem to be a cost-justifiable product for television DVDs.  Which is a shame, it truly is, as I enjoyed this show a lot.

A warm welcome to you, Mr. Greenberg.

Can't really add or embellish anything that hasn't already been stated, but I'll join the welcoming committee nonetheless.

I see not one single reason why reruns of The Challengers are any less viable than reruns of Jeopardy. If anything they would be MORE viable for the historical snapshot that they provide.
