Home Run Derby, from the early-60s. Back when ESPN Classic was good Classic Sports Network, they aired this.

The mother-ship [ESPN itself] also aired it in the late 80s.

This is way cool, for tons of reasons beyond seeing the great players. The terribly awkward interaction between the host and the players, the dreadfully slow pace, famous big leaguers excited about winning hundreds of dollars. And there's no advertising behind the batter!

I just noticed that over the weekend. Amazon also lists vol. 2 and 3 releases, due out in August in September, respectively. The run times for each seem to be 200-225 minutes, though Amazon lists 100 minutes for vol. 1 (TVShowsonDVD lists it at 200 minutes). So it seems to be about 8-9 episodes/volume (assuming 25 minutes/episode). Anyone know how many episodes there were?

I'll definitely be getting at least the first volume, as I used to enjoy watching the shows on Classic Sports Net.

If it ran one season, either 26 or 39 episodes, most likely.  I'm surprised that I can't find an episode guide on the web.

This news article from a few years ago says 26 episodes of *Home Run Derby* were produced.

Another Web site, SportsHollywood.com, has a piece on the ballpark where HR Derby was taped, Wrigley Field (the California edition :) ).  The site says episodes were taped in 1959 and 1960 (presumably during the offseason).

We don't have the discs here yet, but I do know the running times from the press release -- 200 minutes for set one, and 225 for sets two and three -- so a guess of 8+9+9=26 would seem pretty accurate.  Retail will be $15 each.

Yeah, I checked the episode count at work tonight. I don't know why I didn't think to do it last night - I have access to a database of practically every show that has ever aired. And there were 26 episodes, as noted. Interesting they're doing three separate volumes rather than one three-disc set, since it appears the three volumes have all the episodes. But at least all the episodes are there. I'm sure I'll get them all.

And it should be mentioned that Mark Scott, the host of the series, died of a heart attack shortly after the first season's tapings had concluded at the age of 45.  According to Wikipedia, this was one of the reasons behind the demise of the show.
