Down to Two?
« on: July 16, 2007, 02:44:36 PM »
Hi, it's only been about two years since I've posted. No time like today to start again I guess.

On my local radio station this morning, the DJ said that CBS has narrowed it down to two people to host TPIR. Todd Newton and Mark Stienes (sp?) No mention of George Hamiltion.

I don't know if I can really trust a Canadian DJ...has anyone else heard this?

Thanks,
Todd

Yes. Congratulations, your DJ reads the New York Post, whose error-ridden article stating same has been debunked as a pile of ill-informed crap.

Well, I can't promise that's the "real answer", but the Post did print an article the other day that stated that, and then made several other statements that suggested that the source material the writer was using was severely outdated and that he did zero fact-checking, which brought the veracity of the whole thing into question.

As much as there are many here who don't like him, Rich Fields talked to TVWeek's James Hibberd about what's going on at "TPIR" during last weekend's GSN press party:

http://www.tvweek.com/blogs/james-hibberd/...wasnt_right.php

Note that he didn't say anything (directly quoted) about who's likely, but he did say why Rosie O'Donnell won't and George Hamilton probably will not.

Our staff had a meeting with our CBS rep for a Fall Season presentation this morning.  I brought up the question of TPIR.   She had confirmed that Steines and "some guy from Game Show Network" (Todd Newton) are in the running.  She also mentioned that  John O'Hurley was also being considered, but was not sure if he was still in the mix or not. But Hamilton is definitely out!

BTW, "The Big Bang Theory" looks like a solid hit, "Cane" and "Kid Town" have good chances,  "Laughlin, Nevada" is a "Cop Rock" lite and may die quick, and pray that "Swingtown" doesn't see the light of day come mid-season!  Depending on how "Power of 10" does next month, it might be a better candidate for a February return than "Swingtown".

I want to quote one line that stuck out to me....
Quote
CBS went after Ryan Seacrest, sources said, but his price tag was too high.
What's the price tag for him at a comparable time to Barker?

Who makes/made more in recent history (probably per episode?): Ryan Seacrest or Bob Barker?

Per Episode, Seacrest (Barker made about $28,500 per ep if the rumors were true)
Per season/year, probably Barker (rumored to be $5M)

Is that because AI only runs the first half of the year, and airs twice a week?

Assuming 175 episodes per year, $28,500 * 175 = $4,987,500. That adds up.

Let's say your average daytime network game show emcee was making $5,000 per week in 1980 (Allen Ludden was making $4,500). Adjusted for inflation, that's about $13,400 per week in 2006, or about $700,000 per year. Double that because TPIR is a one-hour show, and it comes out to just under $1,500,000 per year. So the fair market price for a TPIR emcee in 2007 is about $1.5 million, or less than one-third of what Barker was making.
