That's who jumped to my mind as well. Trebek even pulled triple-duty with ClCn, TTTT91 and J! for a few months in 1991.

On the contrary, I'm sure Dave Price is quite neat and organized...but that a good host does not make. :-)

My 2 cents? Sure, I had some reservations about Mr. Carey when he was first announced as a candidate, but after seeing his comments about respecting the show, I think he'll do fine. Remember, a lot of his early stand-up routine was based around being a "regular guy"--exactly what a host needs to relate with contestants.

And you know what? No matter what the outcome, it really doesn't matter to me. If the show lasts another 35 years with Drew, great. If they can't finish the first taping because the studio audience starts rioting and destroying the set, it was fun while it lasted.

Understand that I have great hopes that Drew will do a good job in this role.

That said, to you people who are saying "Oh, it'll be okay because he said he respects the show": Um, what ELSE is he going to say to a member of the media asking him about that?

Mind you, I hope it's true, but I'm going to judge him on his actions, not on his words.

Good points.

One good thing the hiring says is that CBS is investing money in the show, rather than hiring someone on the cheap (presumably Newton) and coasting.

Isn't that what they did for the theme to Family Feud in the late 80s -- re-orchestrate for stereo?

I know that to the "naked ear" the Dawson and Combs Feud themes are the same from start to finish, but the latter theme was pretty much "synthesized". For us old school music buffs, synthesized music is garbage since the music is "too perfect" and does not rely on real instruments or musicians who might miss a beat or a note here and there..

Speaking of TPIR Music cues, I would assume that when they started introducing the newer music cues in the mid to late 80s, that all of these cues were done in stereo?

I guess my biggest concern is that since the original cues are not in stereo, is there a chance that we may hear even less of those in the future.

You're right Chris. If they can remix old mono music from the 50s and 60s into "simulated stereo" versions, why can't they just go that route? All it is is just synchronizing 2 copies of the mono theme then tweaking the equilization in both the left and right channels to highlight and mute specific instruments.

I'm sort of A-B'ing the 2 as I write------the '88 theme was pretty much a remaster, but with a new [synthesized?] drum track.

I'd assume that Score was already mastering the themes and cues to stereo as far back as the early '70's, but they'd have to have been transferred to a mono mix for broadcast.

I think it's safe to assume that there still exist 24-track, 2" masters from the recording sessions in England. If that is the case, all they have to do is remix those masters to stereo; put the brass on the left channel, the strings on the right channel, the MOOG here, percussion there. That's how you'd make a stereo recording in 2007 and no rearranging or reorchestration is needed.

In the original theme there is only one synthesized instrument: the MOOG. If Kalehoff does a complete "reorchestration" of the theme, it is conceivable that all of the instruments will be synthesized. If that happens, the theme will definitely lose its "soul". It will sound good, but it won't be the theme we're used to hearing. If we're lucky, he will keep many of the legacy instrumental parts: flugelhorn, tuba, glock, harp, trombones, etc.

Oddly enough, that's already been done a few years ago. I don't believe it's ever used on air.

I believe Jonathan commissioned a remix/rearrangement after his dad died. I don't know if it had any connection to the '94 music. (Speculating) It is possible that Barker didn't want to use it on the daytime show.
