Ty Treadway interview
« on: August 04, 2007, 05:53:31 PM »
WNBC posted an interview with Ty Treadway, and he describes Merv Griffin's Crosswords...catchy title. Unfortunately, the only true show clips come from that Flash presentation from earlier this year.

From what it sounds like, you have two contestants who work to solve the crosswords in round one. In the second round, three "spoilers", as Ty called them, come in and settle on the top tier. Should a contestant answer incorrectly, one of the spoilers can buzz-in and answer, thus taking the contestant's money and position. A displaced contestant may come back and reclaim their spot, though.

Sounds very fun...and Ty seems to "get it". Now, what I found interesting is that the show will air as a double run, which makes sense, considering how current half-hour syndication works. Just never heard anything about a double run until I saw that clip. Will Temptation work the same way?

Now celebrating his 22nd season on GSF!

Wow...he does get it.  That's good.  Really good.

I doubt my station will go double-run with this; it'll probably piggyback with "Millionaire".

Won't happen in Seattle, either, it'll air at 7:30, opposite Jeopardy, in H2's old spot. KING won't touch Evening Magazine.

Here's an interesting question: since these are both Merv's properties (CW/J!), can they do that?

Not sure, but since J! is technically a Sony product, isn't it a moot point?

No, that's not interesting, because it doesn't make a damned bit of sense. That's akin to suggesting that no G/T show could air opposite each other.

I think he's referring to the situation with Dr. Phil, where stations are contractually prohibited from airing it opposite Oprah Winfrey.

But in any event, it's a moot point because J! hasn't been a Merv Griffin property for some time.

And the same applies for Rachael Ray, which can't air against Oprah but can air against Dr. Phil and does in a variety of markets.

As for in my neck of the woods, given that the affiliate list for Crosswords lists WTEN, I'd be shocked if it didn't take the 12:30 PM slot where the second run of Jeopardy ends.

As of now, CW is scheduled to air on our CBS affil at 11:30am, right after Feud.  And then at 5PM, CW will also air on our Fox affiliate, which will air The Simpsons at 5:30.

David's correct re: Phil/Oprah, since they're both distributed by CBS TV Distribution (formerly King World).  J!/WoF are also distributed by them -- Crosswords is by Program Partners -- so there's no syndex as far as I know on those shows.

It does make sense (for a change).... the 'exclusive time period' works for Oprah, who has it in her contract with King World that none of Harpo Productions' shows (Phil and Rachael) can air opposite the queen.

There is no rule for CW, just because it was created by Merv....it has no production affiliation with Wheel/Jep, both of which Merv sold years ago.

Just finished watching the video (Gawd, I miss "Live at Five". RIP, WNBC)...

I like that Ty has enthusiasm, and the show certainly has received a lot of buzz here, but....

I honest to Gawd hasn't seen that much Merv Griffin asskissing since Denny Terrio was on the tee-vee.

I think Ty has won Good Host Points for "getting it."  Being good on camera is still important, but I'd rather have a decent host understand what's what rather than have a great host not care.  Of course, the two may not be mutually exclusive, but if I had a choice, I would take the former.
