Po10 Scores Big...
« on: August 08, 2007, 03:43:51 PM »
Power of 10 pulled some good numbers last night, and looks like they are beginning their preparations for a return later in the season.

Since this was an internal press release, I have to cut & paste verbatim without any link.

Per CBS:

POWER OF 10 – Press Release

"POWER OF 10" LAUNCHES AN ONLINE GAME COMPONENT TESTING AMERICA'S KNOWLEDGE AND GIVING VIEWERS THE CHANCE TO BE CONSIDERED AS CONTESTANTS FOR THE PRIMETIME GAME SHOW

Viewers will be able to test their knowledge of how America thinks from the comfort of their own homes by logging onto www.cbs.com/powerof10 and answering poll questions similar to those from POWER OF 10.  Like the primetime game show, airing Wednesdays at 8:00 PM, ET/PT on the CBS Television Network, online players must accurately predict the American public's response to intriguing poll questions, and those who are successful may qualify to be considered as a contestant on the primetime show.

Players will be asked 10 questions where they must choose a specific percentage as their answer for each question.  Depending on the difference between the correct answer and the answer given, players will be awarded the difference between the numbers in points. For example, if the player guesses 67% as an answer, and the correct answer is 70%, they will be given three points. The goal is to finish with the lowest number of points.

Each online game will have a six hour window.  Therefore, game play will be open from 5:59 PM to 11:59 PM (PT) and 8:59 PM to 2:59 AM (ET) once a week on the following dates:

Wednesday, August 8th
Wednesday, August 15th
Wednesday, August 22nd

Players will be notified via email of their score within 24 hours of the game's end. Players will also be notified if their score qualifies them for a potential appearance on the primetime game show.  Each game can be played only one time, however, viewers can return the following week to play the next game on the scheduled Wednesday release date.

POWER OF 10, a high-stakes, primetime game show where contestants compete for the chance to win $10 million, airs Wednesdays (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  Drew Carey serves as host and Michael Davies is the executive producer for Embassy Row in association with Sony Pictures Television.

That's great to hear that Power of 10 got good ratings last night. I have a feeling PO10 will be around for a very long time.

Because they won one night of ratings? (And not only that, but I would hazard to say that they got a boost from people tuning to CBS expecting to see Big Brother.) Dude.

As forward as I was looking to this show, that's how I stumbled on it. I initally forgot P10's timeslot and I also forgot BB was on at 9 on Tuesday's, but hey. Pleasant surprises aren't bad.

Forgive me for sounding stupid, but does BB still draw big?  I never have watched BB.
When you're at the grocery game and you hear the beep, think of all the fun you could have at "Crazy Rachel's Checkout Counter!"

Well enough in the demos that CBS brings it back every year.  It's never been a superhit, but it does well enough.

I don't even think Les watches, and his wife is on it.

Incidentally, the actual number is 6.1/11 with a 2.7 in the 18-49s.  It's not a horrible number, particularly for a summer series, but to say it scores big is a misstatement.  It wasn't even the top show on the night (it lost to America's Got Talent).  If audience erosion occurs at a rate here similar to what occurs with most other new shows, the numbers could get fairly poor in a hurry.

Since it was asked, Big Brother did a 4.8/8, but scored a 3.0 in 18-49.  The 4.8/8 isn't great, but the 3.0 enabled Big Brother to tie for 2nd on the night - behind Talent, and tied with The Singing Bee.

And Marc Berman has up last night's numbers:

"PO10" was first in total households, a distant second in 18-49 to "So You Think You Can Dance."  It helped that the other competition was reruns and burning off of "Knights of Prosperity" on ABC.

It's early.

Well, it wasn't that distant in 18-49: 2.0 vs. 2.8 for Dance. Funny how the broadcasters are now fighting over what they would have once considered cable scraps (couldn't resist). An eight-tenths of one point difference! Okay, it's summer and the ratings are anything but easy.

My guess is that's Drew's 18-49 numbers aren't the main concern for CBS. If he can hold decent household ratings for Power of 10 - and so far, so good - the execs probably figure he won't sink TPiR. Barker didn't wow 'em in 18-49, and I doubt that CBS is expecting much more from Carey in the demo. But they do want to hang onto the audience they've already got.
