One of the first things I do when I respond to someone's request is warn them about the quality.  I just feel better when I send it out that they know what they're in for, and then the most common reaction I get is "Oh, it wasn't nearly as bad as I was afraid it would be."  Always better to be surprised in the positive direction.

And yeah, I do it all the time, and never expect anything in return.  Although since I don't post my collection on the web as some of you do, I probably get fewer requests.

In the tech support business we called this "setting expectations." For example, warning a customer in advance that he might have to go through six CableCards before finding two that will work in his Tivo.
