And Jerry Springer is hosting the UK version! Amazing.
[/quote]
Seriously? Cause that's inspired casting.

I thought Jerry missed his calling as a gs host after watching him do "Greed".

This is right up his alley, if it's true.

How long before they use the question "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?"

Mike Darnell must be feeling really cocky about now--I wonder if he would've grabbed this show back in November at the height of the whole O.J. "If I Did It" debacle.

NBC just announced a new show premiering next Tuesday (as long as it tests okay) called "Don't Tell a Lie!" in which a contestant who can answer a mere 17 questions truthfully will win $2,000,000. There will be two "lielines," a chance to "cross your fingers" and to have someone from the audience answer the question. Gilbert Gottfried is tabbed to host, unless his Fox gig comes through, then it will be Carrot Top, as these are the only late-80s stand-up comics still available.

I think he was being sarcastic.  (self-WHOOOOOOOOOSH inserted here) But using a certain three-letter abbreviation would be cause for bannination....

I, for one, am confused.

(And if it was sarcasm, it was very poor sarcasm that really came off as posting unsubstantiated rumor as fact.)

I think Lie Detector was Ralph Andrews last show to air. One of the "subjects" was Bo Gritz, who lived here in Westchester (Los Angeles) with his stunning wife Claudia for awhile. He flunked questions about his "Rambo style" incursion into Viet Nam.

I gathered it was a sarcastic reverse on Fox's OMG GOTTA RUSH A RIPOFF TO AIR philosophy of game shows as of recent history (see Lyrics, Don't Forget The and Chamber, The).  And it was poorly disguised as a unsubstantiated rumor.

Couldn't have been the last.  I think that goes to Yahtzee, which aired the January after Lingo premiered.  Lie Detector was from 1983.  Unless it's a different one by the same name.

And not just game shows (see "Spouses, Trading" and "911, Nanny").

I'm sorry, Chris, but if you weren't thrown towards it being sarcastic (and your clues should have been Gilbert Gottfried and Carrot Top), you need to get a new detector.

Are you seriously telling me that you would completely and totally rule out the possibility of that happening? After they hired Bob Saget? After Drew Carey got the biggest gig in the industry? After Set For Life?

If you are, then you're snarking for the sake of snarking. Which I can't say surprises me.

I was being sarcastic, and I apologize that it wasn't funnier or more apparent.

Oh, get a grip, Lemon. Seriously. I'm not the one that didn't get the joke. And considering your curmudgeonly attitude when it comes to certain jokes, I can't say THAT surprises me.

Come on...Gilbert Gottfried and CARROT TOP as serious considerations? Those are two guys I would definitely rule out.

(Don't need to apologize, Neumms...some people got it, others didn't. Not your fault.)

Chris has a point that given some of the talent choices we've seen of late, Gilbert Gottfried and Carrot Top aren't out of the realm of possibility.  Also, considering some of the idiocies we've seen in concepts (and considering that Fox is, well, Fox), Neumms's description isn't as farfetched as it should have been.  That said, the line "as these are the only late-80s stand-up comics still available" was a clear clue, IMO, that it was a joke.

Bottom line: Neumms's post came off to me more as an April Fools-type "let's reel 'em in and then surprise them at the end" thing rather than as an obvious attempt at humor.  No harm was done but you all know how we feel about April Fools jokes.
