Not mine, that's exactly what my dad says.

Yup, my dad used to swear by the "screen-filling" virtues of pan-and-scan, as well. Hated the letterboxes, no matter how much I argued the virtues of seeing a movie as it was intended. He finally got an HDTV and now complains about letterboxing "the other way" -- i.e., pillarboxing on 4:3 content. (But to his credit, he does watch those programs in their intended aspect ratios rather than turning on side stretching just for the sake of "filling the screen.")

Re: Power of Ten tape dates -- PoT did indeed start taping shows for air after Drew was announced as TPIR host, so the two TPIR mentions thus far haven't been coincidental. The show has a short lead time so that the questions can reference current events (e.g., the Hillary Clinton/feminism question), although this hasn't come into play so much yet.

RE: the original topic...I'm really excited now.  It'll be interesting to see how this will turn out.

RE: this J! tangent...I liked the 91-97 set (the grids).

Seconded on both counts. I'm really looking forward to the new season of TPiR, whenever that may be.

TonySCV over at golden-road.net (who IIRC, is Tony Harrison of tpir.tv) attended today's tapings, and has a Q&A thread here.

Sounds good, I'm looking forward to seeing the freshened set with Drew at the helm!

I wonder if the set tweaks and other updates have been rolling around for a while in the minds of the Price staff, or if the changes were all brainstormed just in the last couple of months.  Probably some combination of both.

Those change-resistant people are probably the same ones who think pan-and-scanned films give you more of the picture, because it "fills up the screen", even though it cuts off a good 40% of the picture on the side.

That one went right over my head.

The HBO (or any "premium" movie channel) experience!

NB: Nobody ever notices that Don't Forget the Ripof^H^HLyrics is in standard-def widescreen?  I gotta watch some PoT sometime also.

Alternately, the show could move to widescreen-only distrubution (like Conan O'Brien does), with letterboxing for SD television screens, and you could join us in the 21st century. :)

Widescreen-only would be perfect. Then they could just have a tighter shot, rather than needing the potted plants. And we'd see less of those gawd-awful things hanging from the ceiling!

Off the topic of game shows, has anyone seen some of the NASA stuff on Discovery HD? Amazing pictures.
