Feb 24 1988 - first announcement of Sajak's CBS show
May 1988 - Pat still taping daytime shows (from an article about a contestant)
Jul 27 1988 - Jack Clark dies
Nov 11 1988 - article mentions Tim Brando as a possibility
Nov 20 1988 - Goddess of Love airs
Dec 13 1988 - first announcement of Benirschke
Dec 14 1988 - first taping of Benirschke
Jan 9 1989 - first airing of Benirschke

Nice work, first of all.

Interesting. They had 10 months to find a host, and waited until Dec. Furthermore, the immediate next day after the announcement, he was taping . Now, I'm not saying they didn't know it would be Rolf until Dec 13, but it does beg the curiousity : Did they have trouble filling the spot? Certainly by Dec, they were running out of time.

And Roger Twibell? Of ABC Sports? Geez.

June 30 1989 - last airing of Benirschke, one article mentions new host possibilities include Pat Finn, John Davidson, Chuck Henry and Bob Eubanks

(other selections would have been good.)

Wasn't Jimmy Connors up for it, and supposedly nailed the audition, but commentating commitments stood in the way?

Or is that just rampant speculation?

While Rolf was nothing special, that's for sure, I don't think he was nearly as bad as people make him out to be.

Of course you don't.

The difference is that when Convy screwed up, he handled it with a fair amount of aplomb. Benirshke was a deer in the headlights from start to finish. He was EVERY bit as bad as people make him out to be.

I actually liked watching Rolf Benirschke and still do, though I'm obviously biased due to his other work.  That said, hasn't Rolf himself readily admitted -- pretty much every time the subject has come up -- that he wasn't a good fit for the job?

You can like him fine, just don't go suggesting that he was a remotely good host. :)

Yeah he said it on the E! True Hollywood Story that "He was not the right fit for the show". He can sing that in ragtime.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I haven't found it.  Does anyone have the original air date of the 10th anniversary WOF and the date of the first of the new puzzleboard?  Thanks

The new board debuted late-February 1997, I wanna say the 24th.

According to Wikipedia, the debut of the new puzzleboard debuted on 2/24/97 and the episode from the 10th Anniversary debut week that was just shown was originally aired on 9/10/92. A contestant named Denise was actually the first champion of the 10th Anniversary season as far as I can think of.
