Merv's Crosswords theme sounds very familiar...
« on: September 11, 2007, 04:46:48 PM »
Did anyone think that the Crosswords theme sounded very familiar?

Take a look the intro of Family Fortunes (2001 UK) and pay attention to the theme music at about :17 into the clip...  the video can be found here:

That theme in the video is definetly not it. But you're right though, it is familiar, it is actually the Wheel of Fortune prize music for talking about cars.

That theme didn't speak to me.  Did it speak to anyone else?

One thing I never noticed about original "Buzzword"...at the :40 mark, there's a touch of the Jeopardy! think music in there.

And no, the song did not tell me that. :)

It depends...was I supposed to hear Gary Numan's voice?

Well, if it was good 25 years ago, I guess its good today.  No need to write new music.

I really like the way the music fits in with the show; it's a light quiz, IMO, and it deserves to sound as such.

Much better than any dramatic techno music like most new GS as of late.

Agreed. And honestly, listening to "Temptation"'s theme song, it's actually VERY catchy. My only gripe is that it's your typical Fremantle theme song that lasts no more than :40 seconds. And honestly, if you listen to the tail end of the theme, it sounds like the composer realized they were running short on time and just abruptly wrapped up the theme.

And it's really not all THAT far removed from the Aussie theme, which is a similarly unnotable sax vamp thing.

I miss The Buzzer Sound (I realized last night that the podium animation is synched to The Buzzer...they took that directly from Australia, but changed the buzzer sound, so it doesn't quite match anymore) and The Fanfare, though. Not a big deal, and 99.9% of the population (including this population) probably don't care, but one of my VERY favorite things about the Aussie show was that they actually MARKETED around that sound effect when they were ramping up. That sound IS Sale Of The Century to me.

Is that the Fanfare at the end of the (last) speed round to signal the end of the game? It definitely needs something.

Isn't The Buzzer Sound really close to the old one? (I agree it would be nice to see the button.)

It's close, yes, but not the same. Really the whole thing smacks of changing-for-the-sake-of-change.

I wonder if it's changing for the sake of change or changing for the sake of a composer who was charging too much to release the US rights vs. somebody local and cheaper?

For a buzzer sound?
