It's probably a little too obvious, but how about BOWLERS?
That would imply 300 games are a formality, not a special occasion.  Change "never" to "rarely" and it might work, but it's still a stretch.

I like the first one better. Besides, yours is 11 letters.

I had thought about that answer originally.  When I came up with that one, I was kinda trying to imagine myself hearing Chuck read the clue and possibly reacting.  Sometimes, especially late in the run where Chuck would do a double take at either the clue or the answer and make some kind of wisecrack back at Jan and the rest of the writers.  The best example of what I mean is on one episode, there was a five-letter word in the crossword round, and the clue went something like this: "In order to get their attention, some wives shake THESE in their husbands faces." Chuck totally broke out into hysterical laughter, and so did I for that matter.  BTW, the answer to that clue was FISTS

Whle I'm here, I have another one to add to the list.

He lost on Jeopardy: YANKOVIC

(sigh)

While not every last clue on Scrabble was of the humorously misleading type, I would humbly suggest that some folks in this thread are not taking a moment to imagine how their clues would actually play out on the show. The clue about what a wife might shake is memorable because it leads one to a humorous potential answer, AND which is not the answer actually on the board.

Here, compare these two clues, both with the same answer:

He's a man of letters: SAJAK

He works with wheels and puzzles: SAJAK

Both are accurate, but the former uses a misleading turn of phrase, while the latter is just a plain (and rather awkward) description of what the answer does. Solving the former gives the contestants and audience (hopefully) an "aha!" moment, while solving the latter would tend to make one think: "Yeah, that's what he does, all right. Do they really have writers?"

Great clues everyone, however, I don't recall at all, there ever being any 10 or 11 letter words on the show. Usually it's just 5 - 9 letter words.

Edit: Whoops, didn't see the earlier discussion about this, however it is a minor stretch that 10 letter words were used in the open. You would only see 10 letter opening words very early in the run and the clues being submitted are better off being used for game play.
