Barker or not?
« on: January 14, 2008, 09:56:07 AM »
There have been discussions about bringing Barker back for occasional CBS specials hosting a clip show. This brings up a good argument.

Do you bring him back thus relying on the past and showing viewers that the past was better? If you bring him back and the show does good numbers, they'd probably bring him back for more. Would he overshadow Drew? Not to mention the various comparisons to Drew's current work. I'd like to think the idea was considered with the eventual goal of it happening.

Your thoughts?
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

You do realize that's not a universally held fact of the universe, don't you?

Everybody's always going to say the past is better, and that's why there are nostalgia specials.  Fans have been saying that the current SNL isn't as good as SNL from five years ago every year for the last few decades.

Aside from the fact that Barker hosting clip shows would be problematic on several levels (there just aren't that many good clips, plus...well...you'd have to deal with Barker), it's unlikely that a clip show would do anything but positively draw attention to the fact that the show is still on the air.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

No more different than than thinking that the present is better. To each his own.

Exactly.  That's why Matt said "not a *universally held fact*"

'T any rate, no.  You don't.  Clip shows, maybe.  You don't bring Bill Clinton back to do the State of the Union.

For me the scale goes like this:

1980 Barker is better than 2008 Drew is better than 2007 Barker.

If that makes any sense. Price is a lot more fun with Drew now, but Drew doesn't hold a candle to Barker in his prime. (Yet.) I don't see any reason to bring Barker back for primetime specials.

Regis back to host Super Millionaire, yes, because he was the primetime Millionaire host. If there was a primetime Price host, then it would be his/her job.

I think as long as Drew is holding his own in terms of ratings, there's no reason to bring back Barker. Someone asked Bob during a commercial of his last show if he would come back to guest host or for a special, and Bob simply answered "I hadn't thought about it". Also, would Bob come back if he couldn't also be the executive producer? I don't think so.

Does anyone know if Drew happened to be in a situation where he'd miss a fair number of TPIR tapings due to illness or whatever, if they would get someone to guest host? (No, I don't want this to be a "who could host if Drew was temporarily unable to" thread) Is it in Drew's contract that he is the sole TPIR host? Certainly would be an opportunity for Todd Newton or Mark Steines to get a shot at the show.

Right now, Drew's showing up for the tapings and they're back to a schedule where only a severe illness would make them consider a substitute.  I don't think it's worth discussing until the time comes, if it does come.

I think Bob should host a clip show, but only if they are clips of Drew's version. :)

Seriously, Bob is retired, why would he do a clip show?

Because some people are apparently still having a hard time getting over the concept of His Royal Bobness (deservedly) being run out of town.

Given all the fuss that was given to Bob's retiring, I say let him stay
retired.  Seeing him will only fuel more Bob/Drew comparisons. One
possibility would be on a prime-time special, to have Drew talk with
Bob on the phone.  Small talk like "Hey Bob, how's your golf game?
Any new lawsuits lately?"  Sorry, I couldn't resist.

In case anyone else is unaware, the Invision software has had built-in word wrap since we moved here from ezBoard, and probably before then as well.

I'm one of the biggest Bob Barker fans around (or one who openly admits it on this board), but it IS time to let go. I enjoy Drew and have no reason to compare him to Barker. Let him do his thing and let CBS prepare for any unexpected occurrences.

As for primetime, Drew will fit in very well (see 10, Power of).

The Price Is Right Special.
The Price Is Right Salutes.
The Price Is Right $1,000,000 Spectacular.

All primetime series, and all hosted by Barker.

Not that I'm saying I think this is necessarily a good idea -- I'm just pointing out that this particular argument doesn't hold up too well.

Drew already missed a few tapings in late October due to illness. Granted, it was just a few tapings, and IIRC they made up the episodes by adding some extra tape dates. Should Drew come down with a severe illness that would cause him to miss multiple weeks of shows, I don't see why a guest host couldn't step in.

Many hosts have had subs for some weeks due to illness (Ludden, Barker?), but is this a forgotten practice?
