Well, this is what happens when one game is an original concept and the other is a hastily-build capitalization on a license, right? Same reason console games of movie and TV licenses almost universally suck.

Key word, Chris...ALMOST. I do enjoy other PC and console versions of game show games, and from what I can tell about the ones that I do like nearly all of them at least had some effort put into making them (Crosswords, actually, is one of the few...the early NES Wheel games and the SNES Jeopardy are on that list too.)

No argument from me on the movie and other TV program license games...most of those blow chunks.

Well, yes, that's why I used it. There is always possibility for any game not to suck, and I'd be a fool if I sat here and made a blanket statement like that.

(The possibility of a GS game not sucking is usually inversely proportional to the likelihood that it was produced by Destination Software, for example.

or do one better. Buy the New York Times Crosswords Ninty DS game for $20, where you get 1,000 puzzles.

I can add some more gameplay information to the PC game:

- You get new levels unlocked after winning certain amounts of money during the game. The new levels increase the difficulty of the puzzles as well as increase the dollar values of the clues.

- They say there's 53 puzzles in the first level, but repeat is high. I've played six games and got a repeat of one.

Whether that's one better is debatable. There are MUCH more than 1,000 puzzles on the NYT deal, and Across Lite is a much better client than the interface on the DS game. (That said, the DS game is portable.)

They serve different markets.
