If all three finish with $0
« on: February 19, 2008, 08:18:34 PM »
Recently, two contestants wagered everything on the Final Jeopardy! clue, and wrote the wrong response, dropping them down to $0.  Alex mentioned that if the third player did likewise, three new contestants would appear on the next program.

If that were to happen, how much would the consolation money award be to the player who led going into FJ!   I know that it's second-place--$2,000; third-place--$1,000 when there IS a champion, and that if a tie for second-place occurs after FJ!, second and third place finishes are determined by who was leading after Double Jeopardy!

I think - and don't quote me - they'd all get $1000.

No, I believe the champ at that time would leave with another $2,000 while the others get $1,000 each.

And you're basing this on what?

I know the child is not going to answer, but I'm curious what part of his body he's pulled this out of.

(scratches head)

Are you serious? And no, I'm not asking a rhetorical question. With your logic, you now create a completely unfair (dis)advantage, thus creating equally bad television. Might as well spot the returning champ an extra $1,000 consolation regardless, just because they're the champ.

Dave's explanation makes more sense (naturally). IIRC, the two zero-outs both happened before the switch to cash-as-consolation (I know one happened on the second or third episode), but did Alex ever explain the consolation setup for either? I only remember seeing the second scenario, but don't remember an explanation.

I might be wrong here--please feel free to correct me--I think they all come back since they ended in a 3-way tie.

I might be wrong--it's early and I haven't finished my coffee yet--but wouldn't they all come back since they all tied?

Not at $0. Three new contestants play the next day.
