Clearly, you don't understand the way the game is played.  Which is fine if you don't care for it.  A lot of people don't.  But to turn around and tell ME that my logic is flawed even though YOU clearly don't know what you're talking about is the height of misplaced arrogance.

Without getting into a lot of detail that you probably aren't that interested in anyway, the 'inducements', as you call them, eventually become so attractive that a player will nearly always accept one before reaching the end of the game, because they risk ending up with a much smaller amount.
First off, Chris, I have nothing but respect for you.  I said your logic was slightly flawed, from a probability standpoint, when I was talking about ease of play (hence, the PowerBall scenario).  The crux of the argument is winning the million dollars, which is impossible once you deal (equivalent to walking away on WWTBAM).  Hence, the offers aren't a consideration.  Want to go for a million?  Don't hit the button the entire show.  Of course, it's moot once the million dollar case is out of play; then the contestant can do all the dealing he/she wants.

Well, whatever modifier you want to use is irrelevant.  You were telling me I was wrong because A) you were talking about something completely different (the fact that the game is pure luck) that I had already mentioned and conceded and B) you truly didn't know yourself how the game actually works.

Yes, but nobody follows that "logic" any more than they would on Millionaire.  "Want to go for a million?  Answer every question the entire show, whether you know it or not."  That's not the way either game is played.

Sorry, Matt.  Got my moderators screwed up.  As for the logic thing, I was talking out my ass on another vein.  I thought you zigged, so I zagged, etc.  I do know how the game works (pick cases, offer, hit the button or not).  I was wondering how it was possible to stick with the million dollar case the entire night and not get the million.  As for Millionaire, you need to know the correct answer to every question.  On DoND, standing there with one's thumb up one's kiester will do the trick.  I know the point of Millionaire is to answer 15 questions in a row to get to the million, while the point of DoND is to walk out of there with as much money as possible (not necessarily the million).  If nobody follows the logic of never dealing, that's their bed to make.  Like you said earlier, several people initally picked the right case.  Following the thumb-kiester model of economics, they would have made out.  I guess my point is this: winning on Millionaire is an active pursuit (if you quit/lag, you can't get the million) while winning on DoND is passive (if you deal, you can't get the million).

\Sorry again about the Chris thing.  I'm doing three things at once.

Hence, Matt's comment about how it's "certainly the easiest show to play", back before all the logic-flaw ridiculousness.

toughest, "The Million Dollar Word Game"

since we never saw the last round, and since the rules seemed to be made up as they went along, I'm guessing it was something like "spell every word listed under 'm' in the dictonary"

Mr Pibb has actually been discontinued since 2001. Its replacement is called Pibb Xtra, with a different formula than the original.
I heard that they just renamed the original and redid the formula, kinda like with New Coke.
Um, isn't that basically what he said?
No, he said discontinued. If you redo something, it's not discontinuing it.

Discontinuing means getting rid of it altogether, far as I'm concerned.

Is there a real, substantive difference "redoing" the product with a new formula and name, and "discontinuing" the old product while replacing it with something that has a different name and formula?

No.  End of story.

OK, I'm breathing a little easier now, but I still think you're letting your general disdain for DoND get the better of your 'logical' argument.  On pretty much any game show, the goal is to win as much money as possible.  On Millionaire, once you hit a point where you don't know an answer, and you're afraid to take the gamble and go on, you leave with the money you've earned.  On DoND, once you hit a point where you think the sure-thing money they're offering you is good enough, and you're afraid to take the gamble and go on, you leave with the money you've won.

If I understand you correctly (and we both know how likely THAT is...) it sounds like you're saying that a logical DoND player should never deal as long as the million dollar case is still unrevealed.  But when hundreds of thousands in guaranteed money is on the line, and of course you don't know for sure that your case holds the million, that's really not a very logical thing to do at all.  Even the most risk-taking players that they get to play their little game realize that.

That's why I think DoND (certainly in its regular form) is one of the hardest shows to win a million dollars on.  The odds combined with the risk/reward element that is an integral part of the game, make it all but impossible.  The only time anyone's even come close has been when they've jiggered the game up to make it easier to win, and it still hasn't happened.  They're going to keep monkeying with it until someone does win the top prize, of course, but the odds of seeing somebody win a million on the regular game are pretty long indeed.

There was nothing rhetorical or dodgy about it.  I was stuck in "don't do anything after the initial pick" mode and Matt was thinking like a typical contestant.  Believe it or not, it's as simple as that.

I lose?  Well, you'd better send me a case of consolation Rice-A-Roni, by golly.

And Matt, I concede.  Played like it's normally played, a player is less likely to walk out with a million than, say, Millionaire (provided he or she has half a brain).  And to be perfectly honest, if I were on the show, I can't say with 100% certainty that I wouldn't deal if the million dollar case were still in play.  Like you and everyone else said, it's the temptation aspect of the show that drives it.

And there's one local restaurant that has Mr. Pibb at the fountain.
