The Game Shows you just couldn't watch
« on: February 27, 2008, 10:36:55 PM »
Just reading the thread about "Moment of Truth" got me thinking about the game shows that have come and gone that you never viewed one episode of from start to finish.  I'm talking about you sat down, you tuned in, you intended to watch the whole thing but left it because you were so bored/repulsed/whatever and never wanted to tune in again.

I think for me the only shows like that are recent ones:

"How Much is Enough?" (10 minutes)

"Moment Of Truth" (maybe 30)

"Don't forget the lyrics"  (1 round)

and that "comedy" game show from GSN a few years ago.  I forget the name.  Was taped in Vegas IIRC.

I remember. It's National Lampoon's Funny Money.

/They say that the secret to comedy is timing.

//Saw the episode with Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols as celebrity contestants.

Agreed on both. The faux-drama and gratuitous stuff they added aggravated the hell out of me. The latter takes itself too seriously to be reverse-Name That Tune.

National Lampoon's Funny Money. ETA: SuperPACMANjr buzzed in first. Didn't think it was too bad of a show.

Add "Free 4 All" to the list.

Let me tell you, from my experiences doing stand up comedy, Funny Money was just a poor vehicle for stand up comics. Try getting laughs from 60 seconds of material... not easy! Worse, the "laugh scale" was quite generous IMO

I couldn't watch all the way through The Game Game... one of the few times Chuck Barris tried to be serious about game shows with this snoozer of a show that was much more "discussion show" than game show. There was just little "game" in the poorly titled "Game Game"

Same deal with The Love Experts. It's barely a game show at all. Cullen has some good moments, but at the same time, he's fared MUCH better on other shows.

Who Said That? was also quite dull. 4 panelists, no contestants. It just took itself too seriously.

The Celebrity Game- Why is a gifted comedy writer and producer acting as "straight man" to 9 celebrities? Carl Reiner clearly looked uncomfy in this role, but in theory the show SHOULD'VE worked because the celebs were all top notch celebs at the time. For me, it was just DULL.

Play The Percentages: Solo Format. I really enjoyed the couples format, so during a trade I picked up a solo episode for comparison. I gave up on it halfway through and just watched the mid-80s Bac-Os commercials.

And if call-in shows count, add PopQ to the list. Absolute worst TV show I've ever seen.

The solo game was Twenty-one with buzzers and a finish line four steps farther away. Why the production company would chuck a decent format and replace it with an unimaginative and uninspired quizzer is something I'm not privy to.

There were a couple 70's shows that stand out to me as obnoxiously bad that I either never watched it at all or gave up afrer just one viewine:

The $1.98 Beuty Show(or whatever it's called)-I've seen better pagent shows than what Chuck Barris tried here.  His outragous trademark style certainly rubbed me the wrong way after just one viewing

Hot Seat-This was ABC's attempt to try to lure the housewives at the time to see what would happen when couples are subjected to very intimate questions.  I tried to see what it was like, but WABC-7 out of New York which aired it at the time was rather fuzzy so I acrually lucked out there.  Certainly didn't want to deal with that crap.

Then you missed the point of the show. It was to beauty pagaents what "Gong Show" was to talent shows, that is, a sendup of both, in a way exploiting those who lacked beauty and/or talent.

Not surprisingly, two of the roughest viewings I can remember were both Barris shows-- "The Game Game" was one, but for my money, "The Baby Game" was **far** worse.  Even for one of CB's shows, the "game" concept is embarrassingly thin.  And Richard Hayes' performance as host practically defines the concept of "I can't believe I'm doing this."  The only saving grace is that (IIRC), it was only a 25-minute show--  which means it was only about 83.5% as bad as it could have been.

In the pilot area, I have tried three times to watch "What Are My True Colors", an 80s pilot with Richard Simmons.  I can't get past the first few minutes.
