These shows are from 1979 correct? That would mean most of those people were born in the 1800s.

Goes to show just how old these reruns are getting...
Well, no. It's actually from around October, 1980.

Joe was right the first time.  They are from 1979.  These shows pre-dated Thom McKee's run (which was the end of the 1979-80 season and the start of the 1980-81 season).

Is this the tournament that features the elderly lady with "four boyfriends"?

/I wake up with "Will Power"
//And go walking with"Arthur Itis"
///I come home with "Charlie Horse"
////And go to bed with "Ben Gay!"

Am I authorized to give out gold stars? If so, he deserves a whole box of 'em!

Well played!

Thanks, but I must credit the contestant for that. The clip made its way to one of the NBC clip specials a few years back. I'll gladly take the stars on her behalf. ;-)

What irked me when watching this tournament for the first time was that most of the questions were mutliple-choice.
Was there more than one over-80 tournament?  I remember one where pretty much all of the questions were "true or false".

They did two that I know of for sure. One in Fall 1979, another in Fall 1980 - the conclusion of the second tournament was highly unusual though. GSN ran the 1980 iteration of the tournament years ago - for some reason the final episode was apparently never aired (not just a GSN skippage, the actual episode appears to have been benched in 1980 as well) - after the next-to-last episode of the tournament the show came back with it's regular contestants. Wink gave a rundown of what occurred in the finals. Wink kept saying the phrase "special circumstances" over and over in his explanation of the conclusion of the tournament, and that due to said "special circumstances" *both* finalists had received the top prize.  What these "special circumstances" were was never delved in to. (Anyone happen to know?)

No, that was Hollywood Squares. With Charley Weaver to block.

How long is "years ago"? Reason I ask is, shortly after I got GSN in '96, TTD was airing the Over 80 Tournament, and I saw the eventual winner of the tournament on the ones that have been airing recently...So I'm thinking they may have aired both tournaments over time....

As far as the 2nd Tournament goes, it aired a couple of months into the Dark Period in late 1997.

OK. That makes sense. I didn't see ANY of the second tournament.

While we're on the subject of TTD tournaments, I believe in the early years, they had some kids' weeks on TTD...Anyone know when they might be coming up?
