Most bizarre or interesting set
« on: October 06, 2003, 02:17:17 PM »
The Whew! discussion in another thread made me take a look at the few short clips of the show that I have downloaded.  That set is just a visual orgy of colors and shapes so I thought I'd throw out this question to the group:

What show has/had the most bizarre/interesting set and why?

I'd throw TJW90 in the ring.  I liked the set, but it was very strange looking.  The archway looked like it had neon pimples and that Joker face above the slot machine had those CREEEEPY CREEEPY flashing light bulb eyes.

If anyone's seen Bruce Forsythe's HS pilot...that set was way up there on the bizarre scale too.  The lights could produce a fit if you stared at 'em too long, but the way the set spit in two and flipped over for the endgame was totally awesome.

I'd like to see a clip of that. All I've seen is the open with the horrifying Chromakey work. :)

Yeah, I like chaselights, but I like my sanity, too. The Hot Streak pilot crosses the line. No wonder they toned it down for the actual series.

Another one worthy of consideration in this discussion is the Chuck Henry 1989 Now You See It set. Between those HUGE rings, and those buzzers (the louvers revealing the flashing neon was IN YOUR FACE), it was very chaotic indeed, especially for its time.

For more TOTALLY OUT OF PLACE chaselight goodness, the Robin Ward TTTT '80 set must not be forgotten. :)

Most bizarre would probably be recent-vintage \"Price Is Right,\" especially with the Hollywood turntable. Imagine if you hadn't seen the show for 30 years, just flipping channels and finding THAT. All those colors! All that glitter!

I wonder if anyone recalls the set for Larry Anderson's short-lived \"Truth or Consequences\" revival. That was pretty interesting--colorful, yet tastefully designed.

I'd still stand on the first syndicated \"TTTT\" set. Groooovy!

I agree with the assertion that the Hollywood themed set on TPIR was ill-advised.

For a show that has seen changes occur much less frequently (in sets, gameplay, etc.) than Wheel, to see Bob talk to the Showcase contestants with that backdrop was shocking on first impression.

AllAmericanFremantlePearson had done it again (see CS2K1, TTTT2K)...but they saw the errors of their ways this time.

Bizarre: \"Quicksilver.\" It looked like a bunch of old stage props lying around.

Honorable mention: the current \"Jeopardy\" set. It looks like they picked it up at a \"Quicksilver\" garage sale. :-P

Also: MG/HS. I know a video wall was stylish for 1983, but not when it makes up just about the entire set.

What about that plywood, stucco, and orange TTD '78 set?  That at the very least may rank up there in the interesting column.  I wonder what possessed Mula to design the set like that?  Don't get me wrong, I kinda like it, but it sure was very odd.

The BTB '76 set was the most thought provoking to me.  How many guys were in the board?  Were they on bleachers?  Did they spend a lot of time looking up at Jaye P.?
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

Nobody's mentioned Go, the show so vain it mentioned its name on the set dozens of times.  :-)

Yep...and it was much better than the series set, although it was cool how the bonus podium rose out of the floor, as well as the big light board used to display the champs' grand total at the end.

That's the one that's most striking to me.  When the show was first on, I was amazed by that huge game board and always wondered how it worked.

Does anyone know exactly how they changed the boxes around?  Did the amounts and money bags just slide in and out, or was there some other way they were changed?

Also, for the first few weeks Tom gave a demonstration of the board at the top of each show to explain how the game was played.  I'm pretty sure that was actually on tape - notice how the camera was so tight you didn't see any celebrities' names?  It was probably too much trouble for the board operators to reset it to the demo board at the beginning of every show.  FYI, the exposure of the demo board was dropped by about the seventh week of the show - too bad GSN's run stopped just short of that.

Scroll down about 3/4 of the way, in the moneybag picture it looks like there are two pieces of steel on either side of the trilon...I would assume they art would slide in and out in this manner- but its a guess.

The Winning Lines set - hands down.  The awesomeness of having 49 people in a massive grid - like a huge Hollywood Squares on steroids.  When I first saw that thing I said, oh wow.

 That's a good one. \"I'll take Number 32 to...well, I GUESS it's a block...\"

That set also makes excellent use of...well, is it LEDs or instant-on florescents that create those great lighting effects we would see on the Forty-Niners grid (Did that first round have a name in the US?) on Winning Lines and on the floor on Weakest Link? (Heh. I was gonna refer to Winning Lines as WL until I realize that Link was WL as well... :))

Whatever it is, it's damn slick and more shows should use 'em. :)

They say the WWTBAM set is a lot smaller than it looks, but the lighting in the stage floor was kewl at that time.  Now every new game has either lighting effects like Millionaire or like those on Link.  But you can't beat chase lights and cycloramas that change color.

Doesn't the new border of the WoF puzzle board change color like that?

Finally, call me crazy, but I think Go might work nowadays, and the set wouldn't need a lot of updating.  After all, no matter what the shot, you'll know what show you're watching. :-)
