Seriously, besides glossing over the way he dealt with certain individuals who testified against his interests in various depositions as I expect he will, I'll be very interested in seeing how he treats the many talented people who created the very shows he performed. For example, we know he will treat Ralph Edwards with high reverence, but will he treat Frank Wayne with equal respect or will he simply refer to him in passing as "some guy who used to be a writer on Beat the Clock"? Will he talk about the lunch with Bud Grant in which he reportedly tried to beg off doing TPIR and tried to get Gambit or Joker instead? It will be interesting to see how he deals with the 1980 daytime Emmy fiasco.

The 1979 (not 1980) daytime Emmy snub would quite be interesting as to how Barker will tell his side of the story again, as he did in a New York Magazine article he originally wrote about the incident. Definitely sour grapes and a bruised ego as I first read it, no doubt.

On the day of the awards ceremony televised live, which he hosted also, Barker told his complaint to a nationwide audience this so-called injustice towards him. Pyramid executive producer Bob Stewart, sitting in the theater, was seen expressing a turned-off look on his face while hearing this rant from Barker.

The Best Game Show Award was given instead to Dick Clark for Pyramid, but he was a no-show on that day. Barker, in his usual deadpan humor, said to the TV camera about having Clark give his Emmy to be placed on the empty bookcase at his Beverly Hills house instead. Barker even dared mentioning his exact home address right on the air.

Chris is referring to Frank Wayne not submitting an episode within the nomination period for the 1980 Daytime Emmys. If he had the year wrong, and you're both thinking of the same thing, by all means, correct me. Why was Barker on such a tirade the year you speak of? What "injustice?"

The New York Magazine article that Barker wrote came out in 1979, and it was about a few weeks after the awards incident. A copy of the article, perhaps in a clip form, might be available in the New York Public Library's Theater Collection in Lincoln Center.

As to the actual date of the ceremony, it was on Thursday, May 17, 1979 as televised live on CBS-TV, so the eligibilty period was for the time between March 1978 and March 1979. The Paley Center of Media does have a videotaped copy of the 90 minute special, and should be available in both its NYC and Beverly Hills branches, with Barker's comments about his disqualification said over the air.

Barker's tape was submitted to the Emmy people, and was first accepted for him to be nominated for the award. But then, it was rejected by its review committee because they felt that the episode that Barker appeared actually aired after their so-called guideline time period. As far as I know, Barker was not nominated for an Emmy during the 1979-80 period, and definitely not in the 1980-81 period as well.

I was always under the impression that the show tape was not delivered to the Academy by the deadline for submissions.

What does Barker say in the article? Does he basically just piss and moan? Does he presume that an Emmy would have been his if not for the screw-up with the submission?
