TTD What is on the podium?
« on: April 15, 2008, 09:21:44 PM »
When the camera shows the view of the contestant's podiums from the side, there appears to be some device on the left side of both of these. Are these mirrors, little tv's so they can actually see the board? Anyone know? It's keeping me up at night :)

Those black boxes first appeared during the over 80 tournament.  My guess is that they are mini monitors for the contestants to see the board.

I've been wondering about that myself.  I first noticed them during the old fossils tournament a few weeks ago.  They look like little LCD monitors, but that's highly unlikely given the year.

They look like some sort of speakers to me... smaller versions of stage monitors used at some concerts.  Probably installed during the senior tournament to aid them in hearing The Winker ask his questions.

DING!  That was also when the Winkster started his pre-game chat from the peds instead of walking to his own stand.

Peds?  What is this "peds"?  Surely it is not a sock company.  It seems doubtful it is a plan for safe driving.  I do not think you mean a callous-removal tool.

This word--it confuses me.

But, yeah, I'm thinking little bitty monitors as well.

From context, it appears to be short for "pedestal".

If that's so, I declare the podium/lectern debate ON again. ;)

I thought it meant "pedestrian" (again, from context), but "pedestal" seems to fit better.  By the way, Clay, a pedestal is simply a support or base for something else, usually ornamental (like a bust of Bill Cullen, a vase of long-stemmed red roses, or the statue of Jesus that got swiped from that old lady's front yard in Michigan).  This is the definition despite how narzo's network uses it (if in fact that's what he meant by "ped").  Either way, I need a Tylenol.

I, uh, knew that.  But I think you need a pretty damn broad definition of pedestal to describe the objects behind which TTD contestants stood as pedestals.  But far be it for me to put any podium on a pedestal.  Even when it's a lectern.

Could you sense me pushing my glasses up my nose while reciting the definition?  (Just trying to keep up debate momentum.)  I think now's an appropriate time for a Steve Martin quote:

"Women should be put on pedestals... high enough so you can look up their skirts."
