Rights to World Poker Tour Expire
« on: June 09, 2008, 11:53:56 AM »
Buzzerblog is reporting that yesterday, the broadcast rights to WPT expired leaving the show without a home. GSN's CEO David Goldhill commented on this saying "The World Poker Tour has been a great partner and the show continues to perform strongly on our network. We are continuing discussions with WPTE regarding how we may be able to work together – including perhaps broadcasting parts of Season VII.”

So now everything that Goldhill aquired from Cronin's tenure has been cancelled or almost cancelled (Lingo).

HR blog post from James Hibberd about WPT's possible leave-taking, in which he conjectures about "High Stakes Poker" leaving the schedule, as well:

Does that mean that "World Poker Tour" won't be airing tonight?

I was surprised that Travel Channel was still showing weekend reruns of previous seasons during the GSN deal... I imagine most of the viewers didn't know/care they were older eps, which made the whole thing seem like a bit of a waste of GSN's money.

Classic episodes of Poker are just as enjoyable as the new eps in my book.  Pretty much the same contestants and commentary.

Rest easy. It did air. First time I actually saw WPT on GSN.

Poker's in decline, folks. Watch how many people throw their $10,000 on the table to play in the Main Event next month. I'll bet it's down for a second straight year.
