The issue of The New Yorker is out in hard copy as we got it in the mail today; unfortunately, the article is not available on their website. (One of the few pieces that isn't available there.)
I've read the article and the overall impression I get is that of a person who was very confused about what he was getting into, and even much later didn't quite understand the depth to which the scandal had actually occurred. I'm not entirely sure that there were any big revelations in Van Doren's essay, but I'll stop there lest there actually be any spoliers.
