The new producer finds out why items up for bids during Clock Game have usually been priced less than $999. (I remember one Clock Game hosted by Dennis James where an item was more that $1000. But the contestant was told before the clock was started that the price was between $1000 and $2000.)

This new setup in Clock Game realy is an epic fail. Didn't they figure this out when they tried it in the 70s? I don't think it would matter if Barker or Carey or whoever, was hosting, it's really not a 4 digit game. Dig?

[/quote]I disagree. In the two playings we've seen thus far, it's seems like the contestants were the issue more than the prices. One was clearly too nervous and bid $1397 three times, and the other was bidding far too high from the outset. Not much a producer can do there.

BS. Blits can pick people who have a better grasp at being an adult, or adult-like, on television.

If you can't handle the relatively-simple task of offering bids in the Clock Game, then perhaps the genetic gene pool is shallower than I'm willing to concede.

I'll be interested to see how this plays out once they have a contestant playing the game who actually knows what they're doing. The last few have all been way too clueless or nervous to use to make a good judgment, and I'm not at all convinced that this can't work out.

(On the other hand, we've seen an episode where the second prize, whose price wasn't revealed on the air, was apparently around $4,000 more than the first one. That's not a good idea.)

/Or is the Clock Game part of the thread over? :-)

The real problem was that English was clearly not her first language. While she may be good in conversation, in the rapid fire bid-higher-bid-lower setting of Clock Game, it's going to go to pot (which it did).

[/quote]First, I meant the person arranging the games. I'd forgotten that Stan Blits had been promoted from contestant coordinator to co-producer.

Secondly, I think you're being far too harsh when you classify people who don't do well on a game show as not being "adult". It's not like they were waving to their moms during the game.

Thirdly, I know it's popular to thrash Stan Blits at every opportunity (I know, I've done my share), but it's nearly impossible to tell how good someone will be at pricing from his 30 second interviews. I'm sure that moron Joseph looked pretty normal in the line.

She seemed capable of giving the numbers. I think the problem was she didn't remember what she had said previously, and didn't know the plan of attack for maximum (or even close to maximum) efficiency. And Clock Game is a game where you have to be on your toes for the entire time. Backtracking and repeating bids means your chances of winning go to almost nil.

When you get contestants who know what they're doing and combine that with the $999 cap, it's a breeze. I don't see what the difference is. Someone bidding on an expensive prize isn't going to say "Two thousand one hundred sixty-eight dollars," they're going to say "twenty-one sixty-eight." Sure, it's a few more syllables than "nine ninety-nine," but I like the idea of making the game more interesting and slightly more challenging by widening the range of possibilities.
