Classic Game Shows and More
« on: January 31, 2009, 01:15:54 AM »
I commented over at the GSN board based on somebody's question, so I thought I'd share the information with our group.  Essentially, this new set is, as was expected, a collection of a lot of public domain shows that collectors have probably seen before. Suspiciously, a LOT of it seems to come from the Shokus catalog.  Still, it's a lot of bang for your buck if you don't already have them (or, if you're like me, and you have some of them on Betamax).

Here's what's in the set.  One episode each, except where noted.  Few details yet (I went straight to the Cullen stuff), but I'll be happy to answer any questions.

The Price Is Right - Daytime show from 7/19/57
Beat the Clock (2)
Play Your Hunch
Dollar A Second
Twenty-One
Do You Trust Your Wife? (2)
Queen For a Day (2)
Place the Face - From 2/11/54 with Xavier Cugat
To Tell The Truth
Name's the Same (Dennis James)
I've Got A Secret - From 1/23/67 with Pearl Bailey
I've Got A Secret - Early ep with Lucille Ball and Winston ads
What's My Line? (2)
Tic Tac Dough (Win Elliott)
Pass the Line
You Bet Your Life (7)
Two For the Money (Levenson)
Pantomime Quiz (2)
Treasure Hunt

...and about at this point it becomes more human-interest and children's programs

It Could Be You
Art Linkletter and the Kids
You Asked For It (4)
Juvenile Jury (2)
People Are Funny (2)

Time For Beany
The Rootie Kazootie Club
The Magic Clown (2)
The Pinky Lee Show
Super Circus
The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show (2)
Winky Dink and You
Ding Dong School

So thirty episodes that are clearly games, ten episodes that are clearly children's shows, and ten that fall into that wonderfully murky human-interest zone that some people tend to lump in with game shows, though most of us probably wouldn't.  Still, considering all the fuss everybody's been making about the BCI collections of shows that have aired repeatedly on GSN, this seems to be a nice little set for the price.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
