That's correct, although unlike in the olden days, the contestant coordinators don't grade them immediately -- they just put them away and go straight into the interview/mock game portion of the tryout. (They presume that no one in the room pulled the old switcheroo and had someone else take the online test for them.)

Well, certainly the first part of it wouldn't be difficult. You just get somebody else to take the online test for you, or have a helper (or helpers) over your shoulder while you do it.

For as big a deal as Jeopardy is making about going online, this seems to be a step that helps their contestant coordinators a lot more than it does any potential contestants. Back when I tried out (and at the time, I got the impression this was typical), only about 20% of the people who showed up passed the test. By essentially doing an online pre-screen, you're eliminating a lot of wasted effort.

Of course, the potential contestants it benefits the most are the non-locals who were on the fence about making the trip out to audition. An online test can help make up your mind for you...one way or the other.

It also helps those who, like me, live in an area of the country where the show is unlikely to travel for auditions. Huntsville, AL is apparently too small a market (and apparently too indistinct a city, compared to, say, the even smaller Savannah, GA) for them to bother with. The nearest big markets within 100 miles of Huntsville are Birmingham and Nashville, two cities not known for having a high number of potential Jeopardy! contestants or strong affiliates (in Birmingham it runs against Wheel of Fortune, likely taking away much of the audience who might otherwise watch, and in Nashville it has never been highly-rated and thus struggles with a weak station, currently WUPX-30, the Sinclair-owned My Network TV affiliate).

At my friend's audition in Toronto a couple of years ago - a whopping 4%!

I don't know how many out of my audition in Philly about 12 years ago, but there was about 100 in the room. Maybe, at most, 12 passed. I wish I remembered specifics.

At the four tryouts I went to in the pre-online-test days, all in beautiful Culver City, the pass rate was maybe 10% to 15%.

Feud? Think big--1 vs. 100. 15 Sulemans plus the father of the 14 kids + 20 Duggars + the McCaughey septuplets and their parents + Jon and Kate plus 8 + an episode's worth of Maury "paternity test" show guests and you have your mob!
