GSN going Hi Def/16:9.....
« on: February 11, 2009, 09:03:28 PM »
I was thinking, as much as GSN likes to buy "recent" seasons of shows, they may have a problem. If they want to buy Jeopardy from fall 2006(for example), everything from that point on is HD. I know they could chop it to 4:3, but would that be something they could run without it looking like crap?

Of course.  Most people don't have 16:9 sets now.  It would look just like it looks to them today.  Jeopardy, Wheel and in fact just about any working producer knows that, for now anyway, you still have to make the picture look good in 4:3.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.

Not to mention there's still a lot of local stations (such as the one I'm still working at for the next couple days) that don't have the equipment to broadcast Wheel and J! in HD and are still showing it at 4:3.

Or the weirdness of Jeopardy on Detroit's station.  They for whatever reason can broadcast in HD, but can't do inserts in HD, so all but FJ is shown in HD, while the latter is shown in 4:3 so they can split-screen the credits.

Someone can prove me wrong, but I'm pretty sure Bingo America was taped in HD.  When they gave me the behind the scenes stuff, it was all wide screen HD looking, and when it aired on TV is was filled to fit the entire screen.

...while the #116-ish market (Cadillac/Traverse City/Sault Ste. Marie) is running both in HD.  Go fig.

America's Worst CBS Affiliate, WHP in Harrisburg, PA (market #41) does not transmit any syndicated programming in HD yet, including WoF and J!.

I've got zero stations here in Flint/Saginaw/Bay City transmitting anything syndicated in HD. (#73, for the record.)

Lexington seems to have taken to HD like a duck to water. WKYT (CBS), a straggler in regards to syndicated programming in the market, threw the switch on all 4 of their syndicated programs (Regis & Kelly, Oprah, Wheel, J!) a few months ago.

The FOX and NBC affils have been airing HD programs, when available, for several months. The one station that's lagged behind is the ABC affiliate - I don't *think* they've gone to HD syndication yet, and their newscast just went HD a couple months ago - the last in the market by several months. By and large, though, if the program exists in HD, it's airing in HD here now.

South Bend, IN (DMA #108) has one station (WSBT, CBS) airing fare in HD.  They moved into brand-new studios in November and threw the switch then (they didn't seem to get the feeds right for the first couple of days*, but everything is straight now).

WNDU (NBC) now airs Regis and Kelly in HD and can timeshift Today in HD.  Ellen is not in HD, nor is news.

The other two stations do not have any HD programming outside of network.

In regards to GSN...pointless move IMO.  The vast majority of your content is 4:3, so what's the point of spending more money to feed in HD for...what...maybe four or five programs (Bingo America (if), J!, Wheel, if they snatched Drew's PIR...anything else?)

*this lead to a bizarre three days where J! fed over a corrupted Wheel broadcast, J! aired for an hour the next day, then Wheel aired for an hour the day after.
/and we might finally get Weekend Wheel...if my guide wasn't lying to me.

That's an issue at your station, then. Ellen's been in HD since at least the beginning of the season.

Whoops...had a separate thought there, and didn't remove "fed".  I know it's available in HD...we just don't get it.
