2009 Daytime Emmys may not be on TV
« on: November 07, 2008, 03:52:34 PM »
According to a blogger, CBS has declined to carry the 2009 Daytime Emmy Awards, after years of declining ratings (the awards in June drew only an all-time low 5.39 million viewers; it used to draw three or four times that much in the 1990s, back when people were watching to see if Susan Lucci could ever win one, which she eventually did).

SOAPnet has reportedly declined to air the  show, as well.

Keep in mind,  the awards in the major game show categories - won by Cash Cab and Alex -  were awarded during the Creative Arts ceremony, so most game show fans didn't watch it (even though there was a tribute to Regis).

It would serve the so-called "Academy" right if the so-called "Daytime Emmys" never aired anymore.

So, have them air THAT portion of the Emmys instead. Maybe we can get the "Game Show Congress" folk to air THEIR awards!

I wouldn't be shocked if E! decided to pick it up- no awards show, no red carpet coverage for them...

Personally, I would see the Daytime Emmys merge with the nighttime version in the future, as there are only a few soaps and even fewer game shows on the air. And those court shows are nowhere near prize material.

Why don't they just go back to airing them during the day?  (When was the last time they aired during the day, anyway?)

If this is not a rhetorical question, the Daytime Emmys were last on in daytime in 1990.

The Soap Opera Digest Web site also notes that CBS has no plans on airing the Daytime Emmys.  The mini-report also has a quote from an ABC/SoapNet spokesperson, claiming that "at this time, the networks have no plans to broadcast the ceremony".

My wife and I watched this year's Daytime Emmys (my wife is a fan of one soap, and she wanted to see if said soap won any acting awards).  I had never seen a Daytime Emmy telecast before, and it was just embarrassing to watch.  From soap actor after soap actor lamenting about the state of the genre, to Tyra Banks and Rachael Ray acting like nimrods in their acceptance speeches, to Regis stiffly reading his Lifetime Achievement Award acceptance remarks, it was bad all over.

I could see ABC (and even CBS) airing the 2009 telecast, provided that it be broadcast during the afternoon soap block.  If not, E!, SoapNet or TV Guide Network could pick it up for primetime.

Maybe it'll be the first "online broadcast only" of the emmies?

Bumping this up, as Soap Opera Digest is reporting on its Web site that the CW may air this year's Daytime Emmys in late August...
