A couple of mistakes in Priceless Memories
« on: April 10, 2009, 08:44:32 PM »
I bought not just the book, but also the audio CD of Priceless Memories. Unfortunately, some of Bob's memories are "faulty", and it could've been fixed by his co-writer Digby Diehl.

He talks about Groucho Marx, but says he hosted Who Do You Trust.
He said the first car ever given away was priced at $2650. Actually it was $2746.

He forgot to consult Roger.
"They're both Norman Jewison movies, Troy, but we did think of one Jew more famous than Tevye."

Now celebrating his 22nd season on GSF!

YBYL and WDYT are virtually identical in format, so I can see how that mistake could be made.
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.

  • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.

[/quote]He couldn't even remember the rules to some of the pricing games in the last few seasons.  You honestly expected him to remember the price of the first car given away?

The point was that he didn't need to. He had a ghost-writer and a bunch of people who could have checked those very verifiable facts.

In his book, does Bob evince any awareness of the shows G-T was doing in New York from, oh, radio until the late '60s? Do you think he would know who Bennett Cerf or Bud Collyer or Gil Fates were? To hear him tell stories, he didn't really know who Johnny Olson was until maybe 1973?

And easily corrected with some information verification.
Seeing simple-to-check "facts" like this one has me wondering what else in the book is wrong.

Bob was on KQRS just before 9 on Friday morning, and he recounted working with Johnny in South Dakota in their early years.  If I recall, he was pretty vague.  An mp3 of the show can be found here.  Click on Part 3 of the April 10th show.

Another goof: Barker claims he was inspired to hire Richard Dawson as host of Lucky Pair (the local LA-based show he produced) when he saw him on MG '73, yet LP came 5 years before that show.
